Family Tribute
Jimmy Kinkead (1928-2012)
Jimmy Kinkead, Blue River, Oregon, was born on April 12, 1928, on a ranch in northeastern New Mexico, to James Albert "Grover" and Nelle (Parker) Kinkead. He passed away on March 2, 2012. Jimmy's parents were early settlers in the NM area and he grew up on their ranch assisting with various tasks associated with cattle ranching. Although he chose a different path, these experiences influenced him throughout his life, as did his mother's old songs, poem and stories. This influence was visibly exhibited in his daily attire, a love of cowboy hats, exotic boots, and fine belt buckles. A pot of pinto beans with corn bread or the opportunity to attend the Pendleton Round-Up registered high on his list of pleasures.
He attended school in Tucurncari, NM through the 10th grade and graduated high school and junior college at the New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI) in Roswell, NM. He maintained many lifelong friendships with the people he met at the Institute and it remained an important part of his life. After graduation, he proudly served in both the Marines and the Army.
In 1951, he married Robirda Flaten at Ft. Hood, Texas, and they had three children. During this time he worked briefly at the Institute, and tried his hand at ranching before beginning work with El Paso Natural Gas. In 1960 they moved from El Paso to Eugene, Oregon where he worked for Southern Pacific Pipe Lines for 20 years. After the untimely death of Robirda in 1964, he married Rosemary Rhoten, his daughter's fourth grade teacher, in 1966 and they enjoyed 46 wonderful years together.
In retirement Jimmy and Rosemary spent many years entertaining family and friends at their home on the McKenzie River. During the winter they enjoyed visiting Mexico exploring the Maya ruins, soaking in the sunshine, and reconnecting each year with the numerous friends they made while there, especially their "Merida family."
Jimmy was a loving, generous husband, father, grandfather and friend. He would give the shirt off his back to help someone else. He possessed a good sense of humor and a special gift of storytelling. He was always close to his siblings and extended family, and they remained an important of his life until his death. His is survived by his wife, Rosemary of Blue River; son Marshall Kinkead of Zhanjiang, China; daughter and son-in-law Mary and Michael Gardiner of Ashland, Oregon; son and daughter-in-law Howard and Ghun Kinkead of Snyder, Texas; sister-in-law Linda Rhoten of Salem, Oregon and sister-in-law Jo Kinkead of Junction, Texas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A Memorial Mass followed by a Celebration of Life reception will be held on Sunday, March 11, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at St. Benedict Lodge in McKenzie Bridge, Oregon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Sacred Heart Hospice, McKenzie River E.A.S.E., St. Benedict Lodge or the NMMI foundation.
