Land tax records are available from 1791 onward. I have seen them through 1810. Personal property tax records are available from 1786 onward. I have seen them through 1810. Phebe is never in the personal property tax list. The 81 acres mentioned in the land tax records was inherited from her father, who died probably in 1796.

MARRIAGE?

Phebe was clearly unmarried when her father wrote his will in 1794 and public records do not treat her as a widow, but on page 22 of Marriage Records and Ministers' Returns of Chesterfield County, Virginia 1771-1815 (Catherine Lindsay Knorr, 1958) we find the following marriage record:

11 January 1790. John Brooks and Phebe Lockett. Sur. Edward Branch. Wit. Philip Thweat. p.30.

Did this marriage really take place? Is there possibly another Phebe Lockett?

Report of Robert Akin as committee for Phebe Lockett approved by court May 14, 1811. Rent of the plantation yields £14 17/-, and expenses are £13 2/3. The balance is £1 14/9.
