Where were Mariah Jane McEntire and her younger brother John D. McEntire born?
In the 1860 census Mariah and John both say they were born in Indiana. In 1870 and in 1880, Mariah says Indiana and John says Missouri. Mariah's daughter Jennie consistently says Indiana, but her daughter Mattie says Missouri twice and Arkansas once. Death certificates and census entries for John's children generally say Missouri, but Walter says Indiana twice in the census.
In 1880 both Mariah and John say that both parents were born in Indiana.
John was born in 1844 and Mariah was born in about 1842. It may be that Mariah was born in Indiana and the family moved in about 1843 from Indiana to Missouri, where John was born. Or it may be that both children were botn in Indiana and the family moved to Missouri later in the 1840s or even in the 1850s. Lamentably, the family cannot be found in the 1850 census.
By the time that Mariah married in 1859, both children were probably orphans.
