He enlisted at Union, Mississippi. He was captured at the fall of Vicksburg on 4 July 1863 and again at Nashville in late 1864. He was sent to prison at Camp Douglas, Illinois. He offered to take the Oath of Allegiance, but he was exchanged and sent to Petersburg, Virginia. On 22 March 1865, he was transferred from Wayside Hospital in Petersburg to Howards Grove Hospital in Richmond, where he died six days later.
