Notes
General:

The following information is from Ozark Heritage, Dent County Missouri Area Cemeteries & Families, Vol. 3 compiled by Ken Fibelman and published in 1994. A general description of the graveyard is followed by a list of persons known or believed to have been buried there. One of them is Martha A. Hinkle.

METHODIST & FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCHYARDS -- DOWNTOWN SALEM

This is probably the oldest burial ground in the present city of Salem and was abandoned many years ago. It was located where the Methodist Church was first built (presently the First National Bank) and extended into the First Christian Churchyard. Many of Salem's early residents were buried here. Some were moved to Cedar Grove Cem. after it was established by [sic] many were never moved and are now completely destroyed.

HINKLE, MARTHA A. nee Parker, w/o Bath's D. 11/12/1835 - 6/10/1858, md. 1856 (then B. D. md. Mariah Jane McEntire, 1859)

I was in Salem in June 2016. The Salem Public Library (403 N. Jackson) now occupies the lot where the First National Bank was located at the NW corner of North Jackson and West Fourth. The drive- through bank of US Bank (successor to First National) is at the NE corner of that intersection. The Salem Christian Church (302 W. Fourth) is immediately west of the library. A plaque on the side of the building reads as follows:

"Near this site is probably the oldest burial ground in the city of Salem abandoned many years ago. Many of Salem's early residents are thought to be buried here. A partial listing of known names is available in the church office."
