The following is from a biographical sketch of Silas's brother Richmond F. Parker:
"Silas served his country in the Civil war as a member of Company B, Forty-fourth Illinois Infantry, and was killed at the battle of Stone River. He had been mustered in as sergeant and for gallant conduct was promoted through successive ranks to a captaincy. He was leading his command in battle when he was killed."

"The June 11, 1862, letter, written by Silas L. Parker of the IL 44th Infantry, B Company, describes the movements of his Company, the rankings of officers, his promotion, and the available food supply; furthermore, he strongly requests a reply from his family."
"Silas L. Parker enlisted on April 7th, 1862 as a 2nd Lieutenant, and was 1st Lieutenant at the time of the authorship of this letter on June 11th, 1862. He earned the rank of Captain on August 15th, 1862. He died of wounds on January 19th, 1863."
