THE TUSCALOOSA NEWS, Tuscaloosa, Alabama - January 7, 1929

95 YEAR-OLD WOMAN DIES FROM ILLNESS
Mrs. D. E. Reese, who would have been 96 years of age on next March 6, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M.J. Reese, at Alberta City at 2:45 o'clock Sunday afternoon. She had been ill but eleven days. She was a member of Dunn's Creek Baptist Church, and funeral services were held there this afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Interment in the church yard followed. J.D. Foster in Charge.

Mrs. Reese is survived by four daughters and four sons. The daughters are Mrs. M. J. Reese and Mrs. Julia Ford of Alberta City, Mrs. Lon Elrod of Echola, and Mrs. Susie Lewis of Buhl. The sons are C. H. Reese of Alberta City, Tom Reese of south Alabama, John Reese of Buhl and Lonnie Reese of Tuscaloosa.

Comment (10/22/2020) on obituary: C. H. Reese is a grandson, not a son. Charles H. Reese is a son of Mrs. M. J. Reese.

AGE:

Her tombstone and the above obituary agree on the month and day but not on the year. The tombstone says 1831, and according to the obituary she was in born in 1833. The 1900 census says that she is 58 and was born in July 1841. Her youngest child was born in 1883, so 1841 seems reasonable. Her age in 1880 was 40 and thus reasonably consistent with 1841. 1831 or 1833 are both impossible given the birth dates of her younger children. She was old when she died but not as old as was claimed. She was about 88.
