On July 10, 1837 Mary B. Piant states that Francis Piant died without a will and that she will faithfully administer the estate of the deceased. She says that the deceased had no heirs apart from herself, the widow.

Francis Piant probably died in June 1837. There is a receipt to the estate of Francis Piant, dec'd, in the amount of $2.25 for 6 yards of cambric, dated June 20, 1837, and another receipt to the estate dated June 21, 1837 in the amount of $9.50 for one walnut coffin lined and varnished. In both cases the receipt says that payment in full was received from Paschal Piant on June 30.

On July 20, 1837 Mary B. Piant, administratrix, presented to the court an inventory of the estate. Assets include cash on hand ($3.50), a note on Joseph Walton for $150 at 10% annual interest with $102.31 1/4 remaining to be paid, an account on James Withinton for $5.13 1/2, an account on Paschal Piant for $33.50, and an account on Charles Tourville for $1.00. The total is $145.44 3/4. There is a list of 60 items of personal property and the following tract of land: 113 arpents, more or less, situated in the common fields of St. Ferdinand bounded on the west by Tousant Benoist, on the east by Louis Dubrail, on the north by _____ _____ and on the south by Paschal Piant. A quitclaim deed from Peter Piant and wife dated September 6, 1836 is mentioned.

On July 24, 1837 an appraisement of the items of personal property was presented to the court. On August 22 the administratrix reported the results of the sale of personal property. Eighty eight items are listed with buyer and amount. The total amount is $500.18 3/4. No one named Piant bought anything.

The land was not sold.

In 1838 Mary B. Piant presented an account to the court. Assets are $500.18 3/4 from the sale, $3.50 cash on hand, and $141.93 3/4 debts due the estate. Total assets are $645.62 1/2. Expenses total $86.02 1/2 including funeral expenses of $9.50 for the coffin, $2.25 for cloth, and $1.50 for the priest. The balance is $550.60.

Mary B. Piant was ordered to appear before the court on December 3, 1839 to report on her management of the estate. A note from the sheriff says that she cannot be found in any county. On December 8, 1840 Colmore Nutt states to the court that to the best of his knowledge Francis Piant died without a will and that he will faithfully administer the estate of the deceased. He further states that there are only 2 heirs, the widow Mary B. Piant and their child Cornelia who reside somewhere in Kentucky. He does not know the exact location. On the same day Colmore Nutt and two securites are bound in the amount of $3600 to insure that he, Colmore Nutt, administrator de bonis non, will faithfully administer the estate. An administrator de bonis non is a replacement administrator.

In August 1844 Mary B. Piant wrote the following letter to her father-in-law Peter Piant.

Dear Father i recieved your letter and one from Mr Nutt at the same time he wrote for the receipt i held in my hand for the amount of mony i put in his hands he said their is a mistake i dont no in what way i do no the receipt is correct for i put in his hands the full amount it calls for in mony and notes and he told me that he collected every cent without any trouble i send you Mr Nutts receipt folded in this letter i have kept a copy of the receipt with witnesses to it ask judge Furgusson if he pleases to See me and my little Daughter justice done and let me no what time the mony can be had and i will come for it and bring certificates with me _________ write let me no how you all are Cornelia sends her love to you all She is going to School and learns vary fast She says she will write a letter before long to little Mary Walton give my love to all good by

Mr Peter Piant Mary B. Letcher

On July 10, 1848 Peter Piant gave Colmore Nutt a receipt for $328.10, which was Cornelia Piant's part of the estate of her father Francis Piant. John Piant is a witness and Peter is referred to as 'curator'. The final settlement is dated September 19, 1849. It is somewhat difficult to interpret, but it appears that the widow received $327.15 and that Cornelia received $377.08. It appears that the farm was rented after Colmore Nutt was appointed administrator de bonis non and that it generated a total of $195. It is not clear what happened to the land.
