The birth date on his tombstone is clearly readable and is April 14, 1835. According to the census he was born in 1848. 'April 14' is probably correct. April 1835 is 4 1/2 years before his parents' marriage date and over 5 years before the birth of their probable first child. James's sister Mary Elizabeth was born in 1848. I am going to guess 1846.
