THEFT:

In September 1948 Anderson Bros. Jewelers in Lubbock, Texas celebrated its 25th anniversary. For about a week the company displayed a spectacular collection of diamonds and rare jewels worth about $2,000,000 which had been obtained on loan from Harry Winston, Inc. in New York. Billie Dale Pollard had a job at the Lubbock airport with Pioneer Airlines as a transportation agent, and in mid-September he stole a diamond ring worth about $12,000 that was being returned to New York. A few days later he was arrested and charged with theft of an interstate shipment. He was sentenced to two years in a federal penetenciary.

DISAPPEARANCE:

In the late 1950s or maybe early 1960s Billie Dale vanished. His mother and sister never knew what had happened to him. Presumably his wife and children did not know. They were living in Georgia. In 2016 I discovered a death certificate for Billie Dale Pollard. He died at age 78 on January 7, 2002 in Palm Bay, Brevard Co., Florida. The birth information on the death certificate exactly matches the information on his birth certificate. He was married and the informant was his wife. They lived at 2332 White Sands Ct. NE in Palm Bay. He was a well driller/irrigation.

There are two possibilities. One is that he left his wife and children and never again contacted any member of his family. I think that it is more likely that he died or was killed, possibly in conjunction with some criminal activity, and that someone who was aware of his death assumed his identity. It was that person who died in 2002 in Florida.
