BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH:
Find-a-Grave Memorial # 22961900:
Twin brother of John Palmer Reese. He was the son of Reverend James Reese and Rebecca (Smith) Reese. He was an ordained Baptist minister despite his lack of a formal education as well as a prominent writer and singer of Sacred Harp music. His ministry covered almost seventy years at churches throughout Georgia. In 1857, he married Amanda Brawner and this union produced one daughter. In 1865, he married a widow, Martha Jane (Leavell) Brooks, and there were seven children born of this union. He was also a teacher of Sacred Harp music according to the Baptist Biography (1920).
SACRED HARP:
In The Makers of the Sacred Harp by David Warren Steel and Richard H. Hulan (University of Illinois Press, 2010) there are multiple references to John Palmer Reese and to Henry Smith Reese. See Chapter 1 "The Origins of the Sacred Harp".
The following is on page 150:
REESE, HENRY SMITH (23 November 1828--11 November 1922)(plate 8), was born in Jasper County, Georgia, one of twin sons of the Reverend James Reese and Rebecca Smith. Like many of his contemporaries, he lacked formal education, never having more than "six months' training in an old-field school." Ordained to the Baptist ministry in 1853 by the Columbus Association, he preached for sixty-seven years, serving churches in Talbot, Harris, Meriwether, Heard, and Fayette Counties before settling in Turin, Coweta County. During the Civil War he served the civilian population as a medical assistant. After the war he helped African Americans to organize Baptist churches and associations. He was a Mason. He married (1) Almeda Brawner in 1857, with whom he had one daughter, and (2) Martha Jane Leavell, widow of Dr. Lewis Brooks, in 1865, with whom he had seven children. He contributed to the Newnan Herald and Advertiser under the name "R.A.T." (Round About Turin) and contributed tunes to The Organ, including HUMBLE PRENITENT, on 28 June 1856. He was buried in Tranquil Cemetery, Turin. According to Baptist Biography (1920), "He was a teacher of singing, and a composer of a number of songs, both of the words and the music, in the 'Sacred Harp' and other song books."
