H. N. Reese is in the census twice. The 154 acre tract which he purchased in 1868 and on which he probably was living in 1870 is in Hill Co. on the boundary between Hill and McLennan Counties.

LAND IN NEWTON CO., MISSISSIPPI:
The first of the following tracts in Newton Co. was patented to Hubbard N. Reese and the second to Hubbard N. Reece:
SWSW section 34 T8N R13E 39.96 acres 4/1/1856
NWNW section 3 T7N R13E 39.63 acres 4/2/1860
They are contiguous. According to "Book of Original Entries, Land Records of Newton County, Mississippi" (Melvin Tingle, George Mason, Myrtis Craft, 1998) Hubbard paid $49.95 ($1.25 per acre) for the first tract on July 27, 1854 and $39.63 ($1.00 per acre) for the second on October 10, 1859. Since the courthouse burned in September 1876, we do not know when or how he sold this land. He was 2 to 3 miles from William J. Reese, John B. Munn, Oswell Hitt, and Charles Hitt and about 6 miles from Marshall Hitt.
ARRIVAL IN TEXAS:
According to the federal census H. N. Reese was in Freestone Co., Texas in 1860. He apparently did not stay there long. He is in the Freestone Co. tax list in 1861, but not in 1859, 1860, 1862, 1863, or 1864. In 1861 he had 1 horse worth $100 and nothing else. He performed one wedding in Freestone Co. on June 18, 1861. The death certificates of his twin daughters Alice and Ada Lecy suggest that in 1863 he was in Anderson Co. Two of his daughters married in Anderson Co. (Malissa in 1863 and Sarah in 1866), but he never appears in the tax lists of that county. By 1867 he was in Hill Co., where he remained for the remainder of his life. He bought property there in 1867, and he is on the 1867 tax roll (no land, 5 horses $150, no cattle, 45 sheep $43, cash on hand $110, misc. property $335; total $638)
LAND IN HILL COUNTY:
On December 25, 1867 R. D. Jones of Hill Co. sold to H. N. Reece of Hill Co. for $20 lot 3 of block 4 in Hillsboro, directly east of the Public Square. (Bk K, pg 36)
On January 18, 1870 H. N. Reese of Hill Co. sold to J. F. Ponder of Hill Co. for $25 lot 3 of block 4 in Hillsboro. (Bk 3, pg 172) That deed was never recorded and was mislaid or lost, and on July 29, 1886 H. N. Reese gave a confirmation deed to Dr. K. W. Dudley for the same lot. (Bk 15, pg 177)
On January 1, 1868 James Jordan of Hill Co. sold to H. N. Reese of Hill Co. for $700 a tract of 154 acres on the headwaters of Ellington Creek about 11 1/2 miles SE of Hillsboro. It is part of a 640 acre certificate in the name of John O'Brien and is described by metes and bounds as being a rectangle 372 varas east-west by 2340 varas north-south whose southern boundary is in fact S60W. It is immediately east of a 960 acre survey in the name of E. Poland. (Bk K, pg 64) The records of the Texas General Land Office indicate that two tracts were patented to the heirs of John O'Brian in 1860 -- one for 486 acres and the other for 154 acres. Maps in the office of the Hill County Appraisal District show that a long narrow tract in the name of J. O'Brien adjoins on the east a square tract in the name of E. Poland. 2340 varas x 2340 varas = 960 acres approximately where a vara is 33 1/3 inches. 372 varas x 2340 varas = 154 acres approximately. The southern boundary of both tracts is the boundary between Hill Co. and McLennan Co., and Interstate 35 goes from the NE corner of the O'Brien tract to the SW corner of the Poland tract. They are about 3 miles SW of Abbott.
On April 27, 1868 J. P. Grace, Sheriff, states that H. N. Reese bought a 154 acre tract at a tax sale on April 27. The amount of charges is $3.49. The original grantee is J. O'Brien, and the beginning corner of the property is the SE corner of E. Poland's 960 acre survey. (Bk O, pg 133) This property seems to be the same property that H. N. Reese purchased from James Jordan on January 1, 1868.
On August 17, 1874 H. N. Reese sold to W. L. Lewis all of his right and title in a 160 acre tract that he purchased at a tax sale April 27, 1868. J. P. Grace, Assessor and Collector, certifies that H. N. Reese purchased the tract at a tax sale on April 27, 1868, and says that the original grantee of the 160 acre tract was Isaac Clim and that the costs were $3.60. The beginning corner is the SW corner of H. Briden's survey near the Brazos River.
On October 30, 1877 H. N. Reese of Hill Co. sold to B. Buce of Hill Co. for $1300 98 acres out of the 154 acres that he bought January 1, 1868. It is a rectangle 372 varas by 1500 varas and is described by metes and bounds. It is the northern part of the original tract. (Bk S, pg 287)
On October 30, 1877 B. Buce and his wife Nancy of Hill Co. sold to H. N. Reese of Hill Co. for $1300 a tract of 76 acres being a part of the third of a league in the name of William Francis. It begins at a stake in the north boundary of that survey and part of the boundary of the 76 acre tract is 61 varas N30W in the run of Aquilla Creek. (Bk 1, pgs 137-38) Today a dam on Aquilla Creek runs across the NE corner of the William Francis survey, so that H. N. Reese's tract is probably now a part of Aquilla Lake.
On April 24, 1886 D. B. Cauble of Hill Co. sold to H. N. Reese of Hill Co. for $75 a tract of about 10 acres on Aquilla Creek being a part of the third of a league in the name of William Francis. It is described by metes and bounds and adjoins a 76 acre tract in the William Francis survey already owned by H. N. Reese. (Bk 15, pg 239)
H. N. Reese is not in the Hill Co. tax rolls in 1865 or in 1866. He appears in 1867 with 5 horses ($150), 45 sheep ($43), miscelaneous property worth $335, $110 money on hand for a total of $638. He owns no land. Suddenly in 1868 he owns the 154 acre O'Brien tract and the 160 acre Isaac Clim tract and 5 other tracts of 320 acres apiece and a 53 acre tract. By 1869 he has acquired 7 more tracts containing a total of 2279 acres. In 1869 he has 4011 acres in all. In 1870 he has the same property, but in 1871 he owns only the 154 acre O'Brien tract. There is nothing in the deed records concerning those 13 other tracts. I don't know whether he really owned them or not. I presume that he did not.
The tax lists show him to be the owner of the 154 acre O'Brien tract until 1877; from 1878 to 1880 he owns only a 55 acre portion of it. In 1881 and later he owns none of it. From 1878 to 1888 he owns a 76 acre tract patented to William Francis. In 1889 that tract is in the tax rolls under the estate of H. N. Reese.
In 1884 and before he typically has livestock of various kinds. In 1884 he has 3 horses/mules, 8 cattle, 9 goats, and 8 hogs. In 1885 and afterwards he typically has only horses/mules and wagons. In 1887 he has 2 wagons/buggies and 3 horses/mules.
BAPTIST MINISTER:
On page 423 in A Complete History of Mississippi Baptists: From the Earliest Times by Zachary Taylor Leavell and Thomas Jefferson Bailey, Volume 1, (Mississippi Baptist Publishing Co., Jackson, Mississippi, 1904), (Google Books): "Hubbard N. Reese was raised in Tuscaloosa county, Alabama, and there professed religion and was baptized. While quite young he came to Mississippi and settled in Newton county, and became a member of Beulah Baptist church; and soon after was licensed to preach, and exercised, as such, in the churches of the Association. After some years he moved to Texas and continued his ministerial work, received ordination, and spent many years in pastoral labor; was for a time moderator of his Association, sustaining himself as a faithful and useful minister of Christ. Some three years ago he ceased from his labors, having grown old in his Master's cause."
MINISTER IN HILL CO.:
On page 327 of A Memorial and Biographical History of Johnson and Hill Counties, Texas (The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, 1892) under sub-title "Abbott": "The Missionary Baptists organized a church of eleven members, in April, 1876, at Liberty Grove schoolhouse, two miles south of Abbott, under the ministry of Rev. H. N. Reese and Elder Martin Kibby. The original members were: Rev. H. N. Reese, pastor; J. M. Young. deacon; B. H. Young, M. A. Reese, C. W. Young, Lavinia Young, Elizabeth Young, Eliza Young, K. E. Young, Nancy Reese and D. C. Cobb. They worshipped there until 1885, when the place of meeting was moved to Abbott. From the beginning to the present public services have been held once a month.
"The pastors have been: Rev. H. N. Reese to May 1877; John A. Harrison of Waco the remainder of that year; J. B. Puckett, also of Waco, from February 1878 to October that year; H. N. Reese again until December, 1879; W. S. Huff to 1880; T. P. Speakman 1881-'82; Thomas Hooker, 1883-'84; J. W. Anderson 1885, . . .
"The present number of members is 121, who have just completed a house of worship. Eliza Young is the oldest member of this church. She was born in Tennessee in 1812, raised in Floyd county, Kentucky, married David Young in 1834, moved to Platte county, Missouri, and finally in 1844 to Texas; and her youngest son, J. M., is the present clerk of the Baptist Church described."
On page 29 of "Abbott, Tesas - First 100 years" published by Centex Press, Inc, Belton, Texas 1981, under ABBOTT BAPTIST CHURCH: "The Abbott Baptist Church was organized in April 1876, and was the first known as the Liberty Grove Baptist Church. It met in the old Liberty Grove schoolhouse two miles south of Abbott. It began with a membership of eleven, under Rev. H. N. Reese. When the railroad came through and the town of Abbott was organized in the early 1880's, the church moved into town and changed its name to the present one. The church built its first building, completed in 1891, on the site of the former old tabernacle, south of its present site into which it moved in the 1920's. The educational building was added onto the present building in 1955. The parsonage located on Mesquite Street was purchased in 1961. To date, Abbott Baptist Church has had fifty-one pastors. They are as follows: H. N. Reese 1876-1877; 1878-1879." The article lists all the others and then provides some general information up to 1981.
"The History of the Baptists in Hill Co." by J. C. Daniel and published at Waco, Texas in June 1907 states on page 55: "Brother Reece lived in the southwestern part of the county about twenty years. He aided in the organization of the Aquilla church and was its pastor in 1885-6. He was a staunch Baptist and a constructive worker. He died in 1888, bearing the confidence of all who knew him."
In Book 3 of the Marriage Records of Hill Co., Texas (March 31, 1882 -- February 4, 1886) H. N. Reese appears 3 times:

A letter sent to my mother September 7, 1991 by her second cousin Louis Bogy contains a facsimile copy of a card which shows the association of H. N. Reese with two masonic lodges.

Betty Glenn Regmund, one of my cousins, was at the Aquilla Baptist Church in about 2012 and saw the Original Membership Roll 1881. One line read "Reverend H. N. Reese. Received by letter. Died 26 Feb. 1889."

MIDDLE NAME:
In June 2020 a search for 'Hubbard N. Reese, died in Hill Co., Texas' in the Public Member Trees of ancestry.com yields 279 trees. In 66 cases the middle name is 'Newton'; in 107 cases it is 'Nathaniel'; in 82 cases his middle initial is 'N.'; and there are a few other variations. His middle name cannot be both Newton and Nathaniel. No one seems to provide any evidence for their choice.
In public documents his name appears most commonly as 'H. N. Reese'. Sometimes it is 'Hubbard N. Reese'. I have never seen a middle name in any document. I have chosen to refer to him as Hubbard N. Reese.
However, I think his middle name probably was 'Newton'. I have a copy of a handwritten note associated with my Walton ancestors. Unfortunately I don't know who wrote the note or when it was written. My great-grandmother Alice Reese married Frederick P. Walton, and the note refers to Alice's father as Newton Reese.
Alice Reese's only son was born in Wichita Falls, Texas, and his name was Newton Wichita Walton. Everyone referred to him as Newt Walton. I knew him as Uncle Newt. Hubbard N. Reese's son William Henry Reese named one of his sons Hubbard Newton and another son William Newton.
