In the name of God Amen. I James Reese Sen'r of the County of Hancock & State of Georgia do make, constitute and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following.
1st I lend to my wife Nancy Reese all the negroes I got by my marriage with her that are in my possession to wit George, Ned, Cate, and all her children, together with a boy called Wesley also the plantation whereon I live with the one adjoining it whereon M. Rush now lives together with all my stock of Horses, cattle, sheep, hogs and Poultry, and all my Plantation tools, and all my household and Kitchen furniture (except one bed and furniture) during her life, and that my son James Reese look after her business and take care of her during her life, as he may think best for her and to have for his services to have all made on the said Plantations over and above what will serve and support her well and gentully during life.
2nd I give to my son David Reese the tract of land whereon he did live in Putnam County containing two hundred two & half acres granted to Boles Moon and one boy called charles to him and heirs forever.
3rd I give to my son William Reese the one half of the square of land whereon he did live in Putnam County containing one hundred one and one fourth acres to him and his heirs forever --
4th I give to my daughter Patsey Locket a negro woman called Cate that I raised and her increase to her and her heirs forever --
5th I give to my daughter Polly Harwell one negro woman called Sally and her increase that is to say her child that went with her to her and her heirs forever.
6th I give to my Son James Reese the land he now lives on purchased of Robert Jackson containing two hundred and seventy acres, and one negro boy called Harbert now in his possession and Bed & furniture to him and his heirs forever.
7th I give to all my children living and to the heirs of my son Joel Reese dec'd all my property lent my wife at her death (except the negroes that I got by her) to be equally divided among them all.
8th I do appoint James Reese Jr. Henry Harris John Rosser and David Lewis my Executors to carry this my last will into effect revoking all others my[sic] me heretofore made. Given under my hand and Seal this 16th day of March 1820.

On 3 Nov 1823 the will was proved in open court by the oaths of four of the witnesses.

January Term 1824:
"Ann Reese an aged & infirm & incompetent person to manage her own affairs having chosen Anderson Harwell her guardian -- ordered that he be appointed her guardian in terms of the law, and that he give bond and security in the sum of ten thousand dollars."

Later:
"On motion of counsel in behalf of James Reese, ordered that the appointment of Anderson Harwell as guardian for Ann Reese relict & widow of James Reese Sen'r be revoked and that said James Reese nominated in the last will & testament of the said James Reese Sen'r as guardian be appointed guardian of the said Ann according to the appointment in said will -- and further that the said James Reese be admitted & qualified as executor of said last will & testament."

Finally:
In the November 1824 term of the court, after further dispute, letters testamentary were granted and guardianship of his mother was confirmed to James Reese, Jr. on condition that he give security in the sum of $4000. He subsequently relinquished the executorship, and the court granted letters testamentary to Abner Locket and Anderson Harwell, and they and two other gave bond and security in the sum of $12000.

An inventory of the estate appears on page 201. The value of 20 slaves is $6600, and the total value is $7063.50. An account of the sale appears on pages 203 and 204. Only one slave, Wesley, a Negro boy, was sold. James R. Harwell paid $650 for him. All other items brought $498.75.
