In 1860 John L. Reece (22, Al) is living with his wife Margret A. Reece (21, Ms) and daughter Verginna E. P. Reece (10/12, Ms) in the household of his father. The following census entry in Anderson Co., Texas may or may not be the John Reese who is the son of William L. Reese. John's older brother Hubbard N. Reese was in Freestone Co., Texas in the 1860 census, but he was in Anderson Co. by 1863 and was there for a few years before moving to Hill Co.

In the 1870 census John L. Reese's older brother Hubbard N. Reese is in the census twice, once as H. W. Reese in Hill Co., Texas and once as Herbert Reese in McLennan Co. H. N. Reese lived on a tract of land in Hill Co. that was on the boundary between Hill Co. and McLennan Co. The McLennan Co. census taker was probably confused as to where the county line was. In McLennan Co. Herbert Reese has a daughter Virginia who is 9 years old. In Hill Co. H. W. Reese does not have such a daughter. I believe that Virginia is John L. Reese's daughter and that in 1870 her parents are dead.
