WHO IS HIS FATHER?

The will of Isham Reese who died in 1816 in Jones Co. Georgia mentions his son Joseph in a list of all his children. This Joseph, who died in Stewart Co., Georgia in 1840, was born between 1780 and 1790 according to the census. Another Joseph Reese who died in Morgan Co., Georgia in about 1833 was born between 1775 and 1780 according to the census. If we assume that the list of children in the will is in chronological order, Joseph born after 1780 is a better fit since we have evidence that Cuthbert was born in about 1782.

This is not a particularly strong criterion for choosing which Joseph Reese was the son of the Isham Reese who died in Jones Co. in 1816.

Another argument in favor of this Joseph Reese is that he had a son named Patrick and Isham Reese also had a son named Patrick. 'Patrick' does not appear to occur anywhere else as a name in the extended Reese family.

WILL:

Probate records of Stewart Co., Georgia at Familysearch.org, "Probate records: 1831-1944", "Wills & bonds, v. A 1831-1835 Wills v. A-C 1837-1944", film # 424278, pgs 18A-20, images 84-86:

Joseph Reese of Stewart Co., Georgia signed his will September 18, 1840. It was proved by the oaths of two of the witnesses November 23, 1840.

In the will he instructs his executors to sell the land on which he lives in Stewart Co. as speedily after his death as possible in order that his family can move to a more healthy section of the country. He directs them to divide equally among his beloved wife Catharine Reese and his children the money arising from the sale of the land, some of his Negroes, and other property. Other Negroes are to be divided into lots and equally apportioned among his wife Catharine Reese, his sons Patrick, Augustus, and Joseph, and his daughters Susan and Marietta. His daughter Anne has already received all the Negro property that he is able to give her. Patrick is to receive his watch and his bay horse.

The executors are his wife Catharine and his son-in-law Jesse L. Bull, and he gives them the guardianship of his children until they attain the age of 21.
