"Births from the Bristol Parish Register of Henrico, Prince George, and Dinwiddie Counties, Virginia, 1720-1798" at Ancestry.com, Bristol Parish Register, pages 82-86, images 85-89/137:

Thomas S of John & Mary Reess B Febry 12th 1739.

The five brothers, Benjamin, Hugh, Isham, Edwin, and William Reese, who were in South Carolina in the second half of the 1700s had to have had a common father. John is a plausible choice. William and Isham are living close to Thomas in the 1790 census. John is not in the 1790 census. Probably he died before 1790.

However, there is documentary evidence that indicates that the father of the 5 brothers was probably John's first cousin, William Reese.

BIRTH YEAR:

Just a guess based on the birth date of Thomas, his only documented child.

WHO IS HIS FATHER?

John is the right age and is in the right place to be a son of Roger, but he could also be a son of one of Roger's brothers, William or Richard. An argument against William is that John was not a patentee in 1738 with William's sons William and Roger, Jr. However, John might have had an agreement with William and Roger, Jr. whereby they got the land in Amelia Co. and John got something else.

LAND in CRAVEN CO., SOUTH CAROLINA:

There are no land records for John Reese in Virginia.

Summaries of documents relating to land grants and early land transactions in South Carolina can be seen at http://www.archivesindex.sc.gov/.

Two men named John Rees were in South Carolina. Land on the waters of Black River is being assigned to the other John Rees since he is conjectured to be the father of Huberd Rees and Huberd received land on the waters of Black River. Land on the High Hills is being assigned to this John Rees, an uncle of Huberd's father. Which John got which land is conjectural.

On May 2, 1771 John Rees receives 200 acres in Craven Co. on High Hills of Santee. The document mentions Thomas Jones, Joseph Kershaw, and Sanders. A purchase by Hugh Rees in 1767 mentions Thomas Jones and George Sanders. The two tracts are probably near each other.

On May 27, 1770 John Rees receives 100 acres in Craven Co. The document mentions Thomas James. Thomas James might be Thomas Jones.

According to Wikipedia, Craven Co., South Carolina was one of the 3 original counties established by the Lords Proprietor of the English colony of Carolana in 1682. The original Craven County's lands now lie in parts of Berkeley, Charleston, Georgetown, and Williamsburg counties. The watershed of the Santee River drains a large portion of the piedmont regions of South and North Carolina and enters the Atlantic Ocean about 40 miles north of Charleston. It is formed by the confluence of the Wateree River and the Congaree River about 140 miles NW of Charleston. According to Wikipedia, the High Hills of Santee is a long, narrow, hilly region in the western part of Sumter Co. which extends north almost to the Kershaw County line. The Wateree River is the western boundary of Sumter Co.

The Black River is not a tributary of the Santee River. Presumably the Black River drains the east side of the High Hills and the Santee River drains the west side.
