PRESENCE in LUNENBURG CO., VIRGINIA:

At a court held for Lunenburg Co. on July 7, 1752, Mathias Reese is one of a group of about 24 persons, referred to as garnishees, who are held to be justly indebted to John Day. Mathias Reese owes £1 12s. Many owe more. (Court Records of Lunenburg Co., Virginia at FamilySearch, "Order Books, 1752-1754", film #7898596, page 152, image 83/662)

Bedford Co., including modern Campbell Co. and Franklin Co., was created from Lunenburg Co. in 1753.

LAND in BEDFORD CO., VIRGINIA:

In 1763 Matthias Reese received two land grants in Bedford Co., Virginia.

Matthias Rice, July 7, 1763, page 237, 20 shillings; unto Matthias Rice a tract of 204 acres lying and being in the County of Bedford on the south side of Staunton River and on both sides of Beaverdam Creek and Jumping Run -- beginning at a hickory on the said river,
thence N56E 90 poles to a white oak,
thence N13W 72 poles to a pine,
thence N61E 122 poles crossing Beaverdam Creek to a hickory,
thence S62E 180 poles crossing Jumping Run to a white oak,
thence S28W 64 poles to a Spanish oak on Staunton River,
thence up the said river as it meanders to the first station.

In fact, Beaverdam Creek and Jumping Run are both north of Staunton River and flow into the river at about the same point. Beaverdam Creek is west of Jumping Run. The metes and bounds description is of a tract on the NORTH side (not the south side) of the river. In the following map, the confluence of Beaverdam Creek and the Staunton River is south and very slightly east of Lick Mountain.

In August 1764, Matthias Reece of Bedford Co. sells the same tract to Thomas Day of the same county for and in consideration of 12 pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid. Acknowledged by Matthias Reece at a court held for Bedford Co. August 28, 1764. (Book 2, page 443, image 362/555)

Matthias Rice, July 7, 1763, page 265, 4 pounds 5 shillings; unto Matthias Rice a tract of 894 acres lying and being in the County of Bedford on the north side of Staunton River -- beginning at a gum on the said river at the upper end of an island,
thence N67E 230 poles to a Spanish oak,
thence S43E 268 poles to a white oak,
thence S15W 12 poles to a red oak on Hall's and Walton's line,
thence S44W 34 poles along their lines to their corner red oak,
thence S24E 86 poles to their corner small white oak,
thence S 46 poles to their corner chestnut,
thence E 106 poles to their and Meador's corner large chestnut oak,
thence S35W 256 poles along Meador's line to his corner dogwood on the said Staunton River,
thence up the river as it meanders to Holland's corner _____,
thence S22W 160 poles along his line to his corner linn on Staunton River,
thence up the said river as it meanders including the said island to the first station,
54 acres thereof being formerly granted to Matthias Bush by letters patent dated July 10, 1755 the title whereof has since become vested in the said Matthias Rice.

On August 28, 1764, Matthias Reece of Bedford Co. sells to John Bradshaw of the same county for and in consideration of 25 pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid a tract of 168 acres in Bedford Co. on the north side of Stanton River. The metes and bounds description begins at a double lyne tree at the mouth of Lick Run and thence down the river. Lick Run is part of the boundary. (Book 2, page 441, image 361/555)

On July 25, 176_, Mathias Reece of Bedford Co. sells to Thomas Christian of the same county for and in consideration of __ pounds current money of Virginia to him in hand paid a tract of 164 acres in Bedford Co. on the north side of Staunton River. The metes and bounds description begins at a chestnut on Lick Run being John Bradshaw's corner. Lick Run and Staunton River are both boundaries of the tract. Acknowledged by Mathias Reece at a court held for Bedford Co. September 25, 1764. (Book 2, page 464, image 374/555)

On May 26, 1767, Matthias Rice sells to Jeremiah Sly for and in consideration of 12 shillings current money of Virginia to him in hand paid a tract of 150 acres, more or less, on Staunton River adjoining John Bradshaw. (Book 3, page 96, image 111/451)

Two complicated documents on page 68 of Book 11 make it appear that Matthias Reese actually made the sale to Jeremiah Sly on October 5, 1764.

On May 26, 1767 Matthias Reece sells to William Mead for and in consideration of 5 pounds to him in hand paid a tract of about 450 acres being the remainder of 894 acres granted to said Matthias Reece by patent dated July 7, 1763 after 170 acres were sold to John Bradshaw and another 170 acres were sold to Thomas Christian and 150 acres were sold to Jeremiah Sly (Book 3, page 95, image 110/451)

So, in 1763 Matthias Reese paid £5 5s for two tracts. Within 4 years, by 1767, he had sold them to 5 buyers for at least £42 12s, probably considerably more. Tight binding obscures the selling price to Thomas Christian.
