LIVERY STABLE:
In Chambers & Knapp's 1842 St. Louis Directory there is a bricklayer named Wm. Walton living on 5th between Franklin and Washington. He may or may not be this William Walton. In Green's 1847 St. Louis Directory William Walton has a livery stable at 264 S 2nd. In 1848 Walton & Eberle have a livery stable at 264 S 2nd. In 1851 William Walton has a livery at 38 Hazel and lives at the SE corner of 3rd & Hazel. In 1852 his widow lives at the same address. On the seventh of February eighteen hundred and thirty nine, I, the undersigned, received the mutual matrimonial consent of William Walton, son of Joseph Walton and of Anna Walton, on one part, and Eliza Watts, daughter of James Watts and of Emilie Netté, on the other part, and having granted dispensation upon the impediment of mixtae religionis inter catholicam et acatholicum baptizatum, joined them together in the sacred bands of matrimony in presence of the father of the young man yet minor, and in presence of a great many witnesses. DEED RECORDS in ST. LOUIS, CO.:
On August 11, 1851 John Piant & Louisa, his wife, and Cyrenine C. Simmons & Julia, his wife, of St. Louis sell to Eliza Walton, of St. Louis, for $900 a lot in St. Louis in block 97 with 18' of frontage on the south side of Washington Ave. and 75' deep. (A6/193). On September 2, 1851 Eliza Walton leases the same lot to William Van Zandt for 10 years at an annual rent of $180 to be paid quarterly. Signed Eliza Walton. (B6/96)

On December 3, 1850 Eliza Walton, widow of William Walton, dec'd, stated to the clerk of the Probate Court that William Walton died without a will, that she will faithfully administer the estate, and that the heirs are herself and Elberton, George, Emma, and Charles Walton, children of the deceased. On the same day Eliza Walton, as principal, and Joseph G. Shands and Joseph Walton, as securities, are bound unto the State of Missouri in the amount of $8000 for the faithful administration of the estate by Eliza Walton, administratrix. On December 6, 1850 Eliza Walton, aided by David A. Harvey and George Eberle, presented an inventory of the assets of the deceased with an estimate of value. On December 20 the latter two and another appraiser confirmed the valuation of the personal property.
Real estate consists of one lot. On June 7, 1849 Frederick Saugrain leased to William Walton for a period of 10 years a lot in the City of St. Louis on the southeast corner of 3rd Street and Hazel with 108 feet of frontage of 3rd and 107 feet deep and bounded on the north by Hazel Street. The annual rent is $250 to be paid semi-annually. On November 15, 1849 William Walton leased to Charles Witter twenty three feet of the southern part of this lot at an annual rent of $85. Improvements on the lot [probably on the part retained by William Walton] are one brick house ($800), four frame tenements ($150 apiece) and one frame livery stable ($600).
Personal property consists of house furniture ($70.13), gold watch and chain ($35), and the contents of the stable ($813.00). There are 7 horses, 5 buggies and carriages, and various saddles, bridles, and harnesses. The total value is $918.13.
A public notice of the sale held on June 21, 1851 follows. The contents of the stable brought $1036.60. C. D. Walton bought 3 horses.

PUBLIC SALE AT AUCTION.
ON SATURDAY, the 21st day of June next, will be sold on the premises, on Hazel street, between Second and Third sts., the stock and fixtures of the Livery Stable knows as Wm. Walton's, lately deceased, consisting, in part, of two excellent carriages and one splendid hearse, three buggies; three buggy horses; one saddle do; one splendid pair match bays; one pair match grays, with harness to suit. The horses are well broke, kind and gentle, and in excellent condition for service.
Also, at the same time and place, will be leased for the term of eight years from the day of sale, the lot of ground on the corner of Third and Hazel streets, being eighty-five feet front on Third street, by one hundred and seven feet on Hazel street, on which there is a good brick Dwelling House, containing four rooms and kitchen and cellar, four small frame tenements, and the Livery Stable, with carriage-sheds, well of water, cistern, &c., &c.
Terms liberal and made known on the day of sale.

It appears that Eliza paid the debts owed by the estate and collected what she could of accounts owed to the estate. Her reports to the Probate Court indicate that she rented the stables and the tenements and continued to receive rent from Charles Witter (the southmost 23 feet of the lot had been leased to him). She continued to pay $125 every 6 months to F. Saugrain, to whom she also paid city, state, and county taxes. An entry in the 1852 city directory suggests that she continued to live in the dwelling house on the leased lot. There are no records of the administration of the estate subsequent to December 1854.
