OTHER WILKERSONS:

Various websites refer to a Joseph Wilkerson of Bedford Co. who was born May 12, 1729 and died March 15, 1829. That someone in the 18th century would live to be 100 years old is dubious, but the following webpage has additional information and mentions an obituary in the Richmond Enquirer which suggests that Joseph Wilkerson really was 100 years old when he died.

http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=wittm&id=I156

Richmond Enquirer (Newspaper), Richmond, Virginia; Page 4, Column 5
Died: 1829 In Bedford County, May 14, Mr. Joseph Wilkerson in his 101st year.

Did he die in May or in March? Even if he was born May 12, 1729 and died May 14, 1829, he died in his 100th year, not in his 101st year, but that is just a detail. Nobody says what the source of the birth date is.

Personal property tax records of Bedford Co., Virginia are available from 1782 onward. From 1782 until 1794 two men named Wilkerson with significant amounts of personal property, Peter and Joseph, are present. Presumably they are middle aged with families. In 1784 another Joseph Wilkerson is present. He owns just one horse. He is present until 1789. In 1788 he is referred to as "Joseph Wilkerson Jun'r", but generally he is just "Joseph Wilkerson". He can easily be distinguished from the older Joseph Wilkerson by the paucity of his property. From 1786 through 1789 he is the owner of 184 acres in the land tax list. See 7/400 in the Deed Records. Twice he is contiguous with Peter in the personal property tax list, and he is probably Peter's son. Peter and the older Joseph are probably brothers, but they might be cousins. Three other young men have appeared in the tax list by 1792. They are Drury, James, and Thomas; each of them has just one horse when he appears in the list for the first time. I conjecture that they are sons of Peter since they are not mentioned in Joseph's will. However, some of them might be sons of Joseph who died without issue before their father did. Thomas appears only once, in 1792; Peter and Drury are gone after 1794; only James remains.

Joseph's sons Parsons and Owen are present in the personal property list for the first time in 1793. They and their father are contiguous. In 1794 another son John is contiguous with Parsons and Owen. In 1794 Peter, James, and Drury are contiguous. In 1795 Joseph, Owen, and John are contiguous, and in 1796 Joseph, Parsons, and Owen are contiguous.

BEDFORD CO. TAX RECORDS:

Land tax records are available from 1782 onward. The third through fifth columns are value per acre, total value, and tax. 'N13' means 13 miles north of the courthouse. After 1820 there is a valuation of buildings. I have not seen the land tax records after 1826.

Personal property tax records are available from 1782 onward. I have not seen them after 1824. Categories in the tax lists vary significantly from year to year, which complicates comparison and presentation of data.

Between 1782 and 1790 the first column in the tax list is labelled 'white males over 21'. After 1803 the first column is 'white males over 16'. Between 1791 and 1802 the term 'white tithe' is used. I feel confident that it refers to white males over 16. See the following article concerning the concept of 'tithe' and 'tithable':

To simplify the presentation of data I am omitting 1) all tithes (1793-94) and 2) tax paid (1798-1803,1815-16).

From 1784 until 1789 there are 2 Joseph Wilkersons in the personal property tax lists. I have separated them as indicated below. See above in 'OTHER WILKERSONS'.

The columns below are
<pre>
1) Wo21 -- White males over 21
2) Wo16 -- White males over 16/white tithes
3) Wint -- White males above 16 and under 21
4) Bo16 -- Blacks over 16
5) Bu16 -- Blacks under 16
6) Bint -- Blacks over 12 and under 16 but in 1815 over 9 and under 12
7) Bo12 -- Blacks over 12
8) Btot -- Total blacks
9) Hors -- Horses, mares, colts, mules
10) Catl --- Cattle

SONS:

In the land tax records Joseph Wilkerson is the owner of a 600 acre tract from 1782 until 1809. In 1810 that tract is no longer associated with him, and we see "600 acres to his 3 sons" written by his name. We also see in the 1810 tax records

In 1811 Parson's tract is said to be on Ivy Creek, and the lands of John and Owen are on the waters of Ivy Creek.

The description mentions Stony Creek, Boyd's line, Dollard's back line, and William Watson's line. (19/379)

ODD:

Apart from the fact that he lived to be 100 years old, the documentary evidence concerning Joseph Wilkerson is a bit unusual. In 1762 he purchases 374 acres in Bedford Co., and in 1782 he owns 600 acres. His land holdings are pretty stable until about 1802, when he begins a flurry of real estate activity. At that time he is past seventy years old. He is almost 80 when he marries a second time, and he has another child at about 82.

ESTATE:

Bedford Co., Virginia Will Book 7/180:

An inventory of the estate of Joseph Wilkerson, dec'd, appraised June 11, 1829: 27 slaves, 6 horses ($30, 40, 50, 20, 50, 10), 2 yoke of oxen ($55), 17 cows, steers, heifers, and yearlings ($132.50), 78 hogs, pigs, and shoats ($95), 17 sheep and lambs ($17), all worth $6624.50; and additionally tools, household items, and crop of corn supposed to be 150 barrels ($375). The total value is $7316.18. The appraisers report that they were shown the items in the estate of Joseph Wilkerson by Nicholas Wilkerson, one of the executors, except last year's crop of tobacco, the greater part of which could not be seen because it was being prized. The appraisement was presented to the court and ordered to be recorded June 22, 1829.

I think that it is noteworthy that the estate of Joseph Wilkerson is worth substantially more than that of Thomas G. Logwood, but none of the luxury items present in the Logwood estate are present in Wilkerson's estate. In the latter case the emphasis is on productive capacity.
