In her application for a pension based on the service of her husband in the War of Independence, Hannah said on September 7, 1841 that she was about 78 years old. The final payment voucher received from the General Accounting Office states that her date of death was August 26, 1847.
EARL J. HITT:
The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):
Hannah was living at Leeds Manor, Fauquier County, Virginia, in 1841 on land left to her by her husband. She received a revolutionary war pension in 1843 granted for Peter Hitt's service. When she made her affidavit for the pension, she stated: ". . . that she was married in Turkey Run Church, in the County of Fauquier, by old Parson Craig, and hath lived in the said county ever since."
Hannah's will names her grandson, Thaddeus Smoot as the sole heir to her estate including the tract of land on which she lived. (Will - Fauquier County, Virginia, Will Book 20, page 221, dated in 1846).
A suit was filed June 22, 1847 in Fauquier County Circuit Court; Presley Hitt etal. vs Thaddeous N. Smoot et. al. This was a dispute over the inheritance of a tract of lease land belonging to the estate of Hannah Hitt, wife of Peter, filed because Hannah's will named her grandson, Thaddeus Smoot, as sole heir to her estate. Hannah's children contested the will, noting that the property was for her use only during her lifetime as bequeathed by their father, Peter Hitt. Therefore, the children claimed Hannah could not legally convey the land upon her death. A copy of the Peter Hitt lease is included in the court papers.
Also included in the case documents are several depositions in which persons acquainted with the Hitt family testify as to their knowledge of the ownership of the land. One deposition, that of Daniel Gladstone, stated that he rented from "the old lady" and that she died in the same house that her husband Peter had lived and died in. A second deposition, that of Foracher Edge, stated that Peter Hitt died and was buried on his leased land.
