General:
BEDFORD CO., VIRGINIA PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX LIST:

From 1792 until 1812 there are generally two James Browns in the tax list. They are sometimes in the same district, but more commonly they are in different districts. There are 2 districts: northern and southern. There are many Browns in Bedford Co. Probably one of the James Browns is the husband of Rhoda Reese.

SALE OF PERSONAL PROPERTY:

On September 3, 1803 James Brown of Bedford Co., Virginia sells to Jurden Rese of the same place various articles of personal property for 30 pounds. Included are "one brindle cow & heffer, two fether beds & furniture, one bedsted, one Chest & Table, two pots & oven, three puter Dishes & ten plates & one dozn Spoons, one Cotton Wheel, two Iron pot racks, seven Chairs, one ax & one plow, one Hog, One Trunk & dae Chist". Deed Records, Book 11, page 860, image 460/547 at familysearch.org)

On January 15, 1802 James Brown and Rhody, his wife, and Jeanet Brown sell to William R. Jones for 200 pounds good & lawful money of Virginia a tract of about 130 acres in Bedford Co., Virginia on a branch of "little Auter river" about one mile below Liberty Town. The will was proved on the first day of the February 1833 term of the court by the oaths of Richard Wade, Jr. and of J___ Burchett.

MIGRATION:

The sale of personal property in 1803 strongly suggests that James and Rhoda were still living in Bedford Co., Virginia at that time. On the other hand, their sale of land in Bedford Co. in 1802 does not necessarily mean that they were living there because that land on Little Otter River was probably land inherited by James with the condition that his mother Jenet would have a life estate in the land. His mother signed the deed.

The John Brown of Wayne Co., Kentucky who bequeathed in 1832 one third of his estate to a son of James Brown and Rhoda Reese was probably a brother of James Brown, and James and Rhoda were probably living in Wayne Co. at that time. In the 1830 census James Brown (001000001--0000210001) is in Wayne Co. The two older adults are both 70-80. In the 1820 census James Brown, Senr (100001--11321) is probably the same person.

A James Brown, aged 79, submitted a pension application in Wayne Co., Kentucky in 1834. He says that he was born in Botetourt Co., Virginia (a county which adjoins Bedford Co.), and he describes how he migrated westward. He appears to be in Wythe Co., significantly west of Bedford Co., in 1781. He may or may not be the James Brown married to Rhoda Reese.
