James Bryant of Powhatan Co. signed his will 21 Mar 1807 in the presence of Peter Dupuy, Wm. Sublett, and John Wooldridge. At a court held for Powhatan Co. on 16 Dec 1807 the will was proved by the oaths of those 3 witnesses, and on the motion of Silas Bryant and Edmund Lockett, executors therein named, a certificate was granted to them for obtaining probate.

His wife Jane Bryant is to receive a life estate in all his land in Powhatan Co. (except where coal may be discovered and what he will annex to his mill seat), 7 named Negroes and their increase, and assorted personal property.

The following 7 children receive specific bequests:

John Bryant -- One moiety of my lands in the State of Kentucky, already given. Also one Negro man named Prince, one horse and saddle, one feather bed and furniture.

Sally Lockett -- Two Negroes, Amey and Matt and their increase, one horse and saddle, two feather beds and furniture, all of which have already been delivered to her. Also £200 to be paid to her by my executors out of my estate.

William Bryant -- One moiety of my lands in the State of Kentucky, already given. Also one Negro man named David, one horse and saddle, one feather bed and furniture.

Jane Martin -- Two Negroes, Eve and Sam and their increase, one horse and saddle, two feather beds and furniture, all of which have already been delivered to her. Also £200 to be paid to her by my executors out of my estate.

Stephen Bryant -- One Negro man named Bristol, one horse and saddle, one feather bed and furniture, all of which have already been delivered to him.

Silas Bryant -- One Negro man named Ned, one horse and saddle, all of which have already been delivered to him. Also two feather beds and furniture.

Polly Bryant -- Three Negroes, Sittle, Sam, Sylva and her child Alice, one good riding horse, saddle and bridle, two feather beds and furniture, and £200 to be paid to her by my executors out of my estate.

After the death of his wife, sons Silas and Stephen Bryant are to receive the land lent to her during her natural life. They are also to receive the mill and appurtenances and 3 acres adjoining it apart from what the mill pond may cover. The testator believes that large bodies of coal may be discovered on this land, and the will discusses conditions of its extraction.

"And lastly I do constitute and appoint my two sons in law Edmond Lockett and James Martin, and my two sons Stephen Bryant and Silas Bryant executors of this my last will and testament, containing seven pages"
