CAROLINE CO., VIRGINIA LAND TAX LIST:
Land tax records are available from 1782 onward. The first list of proprietors is for 1787 and prior to then only transactions are available. In 1798 George Carnal inherits 85.5 acres from his father's estate, and from 1799 to 1824 he has 85.5 acres. I have not seen any records subsequent to 1824. George's land is said to be 10 miles southwest of the courthouse and bounded by Patrick Carnal. In 1814 residence is indicated for the first time and George lives in Spotsylvania Co. In 1820 George is still in Spotsylvania Co. and then in 1821 he lives in Kentucky.
CAROLINE CO. PERSONAL TAX LIST:
Personal tax records are available from 1783 onward. George Carnal is in the Caroline Co. Personal Tax List from 1787 to 1803. In 1787 he is a white male 16-20 and in 1788 he is a white male >16. Based on the 1787 information we can say that he was born between 1767 and 1771. In 1789 he is in his father's household. He has no slaves over 12 until 1799 when he has 2. The following entries from 1787 to 1803 don't vary much from year to year and probably correspond to the same person. There is at least one other George Carnal in the county. In 1802 he is described as "George Carnal, son of Wm." and he has no property. Later from 1806 to 1809 there is a George Carnal, Jr. in the list. It may be that George Carnal, son of Wm., and George Carnal, Jr. are the same person and a son of the William Carnal who is a brother of Elijah, George and Patrick; or it may be that they are different persons and that George Carnal, Jr. is a son of this George Carnal. The columns in the following are 1) white males >21 (1783-1787) or white male tithables >16 (1788--), 2) white males 16-21, 3) blacks >16, 4) blacks <16 (1783-1787) or blacks <16 and >12 (1788-1814) or blacks >12 (1815--), 5) horses/mares/colts/mules, 6) cattle, 7) amount of tax.
