General:
The following abstracts are from a series of abstracts of Caroline Co., Virginia order books by Ruth and Sam Sparacio that cover the period from 1765 to 1787. James Carnal does not appear from 1765 to 1772.

On October 15, 1773 David Woodroof against James Karnal. On petition. The defendant being duly summoned failed to appear. Judgment granted to petitioner for £1 10s, the debt in the petition specified, also his costs. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1772-1776, pg 411)

On March 10, 1774 David Woodroof against James Carnel & Dillard Harriss. On Replevy Bond. Defendants having had legal notice & though solemnly called failed to appear. Judgment granted to plaintiff for £5, the penalty of the bond, plus costs. But this judgment, except costs, is to be discharged by payment of £2 10/7 with interest from October 25, 1773 until paid. On August 11, 1774 a deed from Joseph Dyer to William Ale is proved by James Carnall. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1772-1776, pg 567)

On October 12, 1775 a mortgage from Isaac Dyer to Thomas Dyer is proved by James Carnall. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1772-1776, pg 612)

On November 12, 1778 a deed from Wm. Ale to Wm. Ale, Jr. is proved ay oaths of James Carnall & William Carnall. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1777-1780, pg 134)

On September 9, 1779 a deed from James Carnall to Nathaniel Winston is acknowledged & ordered to be recorded. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1777-1780, pg 191)

On November 8, 1781 Elizabeth Carnal is granted a certificate for obtaining letters of administration on the estate of James Carnal, dec'd. Bond acknowledged and ordered to be recorded. Benjamin Tompkins, Henry Yarbrough, John Hampton & John White, or any 3 of them, are ordered to appraise the estate. (Caroline Co. Order Book 1781-1785, pg 27)

In 1787 the estate of James Cearnal has 252 acres in the Caroline Co. Land Tax Lists. That land is transferred to Elizabeth Cearnal (165 acres) and to John Hampton (87 acres) in 1788. See notes under Elizabeth.
