CAROLINE CO., VIRGINIA PERSONAL TAX LIST:

Personal tax records are available from 1783 onward. James Carnal is in the Caroline Co. Personal Tax List for the first time in 1794 as a white tithable over 16 in the household of Patrick Carnal, presumably his father. If he became 16 in 1794, he was born about 1778. In 1795 and again in 1798 he has his own entry in the tax list. He is a white tithable over 16 and has no property and pays no tax. From 1802 to about 1811 he is in the tax list each year. He usually has no slaves and 1 or 2 horses. In 1802 he is described as "son of P".

In 1810 there are 3 James Carnsls in the tax list. They are described as "red head", "black head" and "Bull". It is not always clear which tax list entry refers to which James Carnal. See notes under James Carnal, son of James and Elizabeth Carnal.
