Notes
General:
There are several John Carnals. One died in Caroline Co. in 1780, one of the executors being Patrick Carnal. Another died in Caroline Co. in 1784. His wife was Tabitha Carnal. Since they died at about the same time, they were probably born more or less at the same time. References to John Carnal in the Essex Co. and Caroline Co. records from 1743 to 1773 could refer to either one of them. The entry of January 14, 1762 on page 265 of the Caroline Co. Order Book suggests that still another John Carnal has died. Year after year the Caroline Co. personal tax roll is presented as two distinct lists. Typically all of the Carnals are in just one of the lists (St. Margaret's Parish), but occasionally a Carnal is on the other list. There is a John Carnal on the other list from 1801 to 1804.

From 1782 to 1790 there is a John Carnal on the land tax roll of Essex Co.; he owns 184 acres, which he sells in 1791. From 1782 to 1790 there is a John Carnal on the personal tax roll of Essex Co. Tabethy Carnal is on the personal tax roll in 1782 and in 1784. In 1707 John Carnal is the administrator of the estate of Anthony Carnal.

The John Carnel named in the 1728 will of Patrick Carnel is probably either the one who died in 1780 or the one who died in 1784. All references to one or another John Carnal follow except references to the earliest (1707) John Carnal. All of the cited abstracts are from a series of abstracts of Essex Co. records (1695-1751) and Caroline Co. records (1765-1787) by Ruth and Sam Sparacio or from abstracts of Caroline Co. records by John Frederick Dorman (1732-1770).
