TWO WIVES, TWO IDAS:
John W. Hines's two marriages are complicated.
John W. Hines was born in 1854 in Pulaski Co., Kentucky and grew up there. On June 22, 1871 he married Nancy C. Luttrell in Pike Co., Indiana. Seven years later as Nancy C. Hynes she married Joseph Corn June 11, 1878 in Pike Co., but her previous husband had not died. On June 12, 1878 he married Nancy Watson in Pulaski Co.
In the census as the wife of Joseph Corn, Nancy consistently says that she was born in Kentucky and that her parents were born there. In the census there are many Luttrells in Casey Co. In 1870 a Nancy A. Luttrell is 17 years old in the household of James Luttrell in Casey Co. Nancy's death certificate says that her father was James Luttrell. In 1860 a 6 or 7-year-old Nancy C. Luttrell is in the household of Winston Luttrell in Casey Co.
Casey Co. adjoins Pulaski Co. in south central Kentucky. What would cause two people from those counties to journey to Pike Co. in southwestern Indiana to get married? In 1871 John W. Hines was very young -- about 17--, and Nancy Luttrell was only slightly older. It might be that their parents refused to give their consent to the marriage and the couple eloped to Indiana, where Nancy may have had relatives. In the census there are various Luttrells in Pike Co.
However, John W. Hines also had an association with Pike Co., Indiana. On January 16, 1871, about 6 months before he married Nancy Luttrell in Pike Co., his older brother Thomas J. Hines married Mary T. Watson in Pike Co. Mary grew up in Pulaski Co., Kentucky, but by 1870 she was living in Pike Co., Indiana in the household of her older brother Amon Watson and 4 other siblings. Moreover, in 1869 John W.'s older brother Ephraim Hines had married Catherine Watson in Pike Co.
It appears that the marriage of John W. Hines and Nancy Luttrell was not a success. Find-a-Grave Memorial # 32241805 says that the marriage ended in divorce 20 May 1878 but provides no documentation. Divorces were rare in the 19th century. Soon thereafter on June 12, 1878 John W. Hines married Nancy Watson in Pulaski Co. With equal alacrity Nancy C. Hynes married Joseph Corn in Pike Co. on June 11, 1878. He was significantly older than she was and had children by one or more previous marriages.
John W. Hines's second wife Nancy Watson was a younger sister of the wives of John's brothers Ephraim and Thomas. John and Nancy presumably knew each other in Pulaski Co., and in any event they would have had contact with each other in Pike Co. Nancy was John's twofold sister-in-law.
We now consider the case of the two Idas. Ida R. Hines was born October 25, 1877 according to her death certificate and an obituary. The death certificate says that she was born in Kentucky to John W. Hines and Francis Watson. The obituary says that her parents were John and Nancy Frances Hines. The birth year on her tombstone is 1876. She was born significantly before her parents married. Ida Hines remained in Kentucky and married William T. Wall in Casey Co. October 23, 1895. Because of the dates one might conjecture that the mother of Ida R. Hines was really Nancy Luttrell, that Ida was born in Indiana, that her father took her with him to Kentucky, and that the only mother that she ever knew was her stepmother Nancy F. Watson. Therefore the people who provided information for the obituary and the death certificate were unaware that her real mother was Nancy Luttrell.
But wait. There's another Ida. Ida B. Corn was born more or less simultaneously on September 9, 1876 in Indiana. According to her death certificate her father was Joseph Corn and her mother was Nan Luttrel. Her tombstone says that she was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy C. Corn. She remained in Indiana and married William R. Eads April 17, 1902 in Pike Co.
It appears that John W. Hines had a child with Nancy Watson while he was still married to Nancy Luttrell, and that Nancy Lutrell had a child with Joseph Corn while she was still married to John W. Hines. Joseph Corn's first wife had died in 1874. The two Idas may have been born at almost the same time or they may have been born about a year apart. It appears that in 1878 John W. Hines and his wife both prefer their new partners and so they agree to get a divorce (very rare in the 19th century) and they quickly formalize their new relationships.
All in all, 4 Hines siblings (Ephraim, Thomas J., John W., and Louisa) married 4 Watson siblings (Catherine, Mary T., Nancy F., and John C.).
