FRIEDENS LUTHERAN CHURCH:
The Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church was founded in 1745 and is located in Gibsonville, in the eastern part of present-day Guilford County, N.C., near the Alamance County line. It is today a functioning Lutheran church.
A translation of the "1800-1853 Frieden Lutheran Church Book" can be seen at
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~bruckner/koontz.htm
The original is mostly in German. The first 87 pages are baptismal records, and most of the remainder consists of lists of communicants who participated in Holy Communion on specific dates. See notes under Isaac's grandfather Michael Charles for all communicant entries relative to him and his children and for other details.
Between 1804 and 1829 Isaac's mother Elizabeth Essex is in the list of communicants of the Friedens Church 8 times. Her husband James Essex is never in the list, and Isaac is never in the list. Isaac's two eldest children were baptized in the Friedens Church.
LAND IN ARKANSAS:
On October 1, 1860 a tract of 40 acres (NWNE, Section 9, T17NR31W) in Washington Co. was patented to Isaac Essex.
On October 6, 1880 Isaac Essex and Sarah Essix, his wife, sell to Andrew W. Essex, their son, a 40 acre tract in Washington Co., Arkansas (NENW S15 T17NR31W) for $1 and love and affection. "And it is fully understood that we are to hold the possession of said land during our natural lifetime and at our death then to decend [sic] to our son Andrew W. Essex." Signed Isaac Essex and Sarah Essex. (G2/67)
Similarly on October 6, 1880 Isaac Essex and Sarah Essix, his wife, sell to Henry H. Essix, their son, an adjoining 40 acre tract in Washington Co., Arkansas (NWNW S15 T17NR31W) for $1 and love and affection. "The possession of said Lands to be delivered to the said Henry Essex after our death or in other words we are to remain in possession of said lands during our natural lifetime. Then to decend [sic] to the said Henry Essex." (G2/69)
Also on October 6, 1880 Isaac Essex and Sarah Essex, his wife, sell to William Essex, their son, an 80 acre tract in Washington Co., Arkansas (E1/2NE S16 T17NR31W) for $1 and love and affection under the same conditions as in G2/67. (G2/349)
On December 31, 1884 Sarah Essex; Andrew Essex and Louisa Essex, his wife; and Joshua Collins and Elizabeth Collins, his wife, sell to Oliver T. Pearson for $50 a 40 acre tract in Washington Co., Arkansas (NESE S16 T17NR31W). Signed Andrew (X) Essex, Louisa (X) Essex, Joshua Collins, Sarah (X) Essex, Elizabeth (X) Collins. In the initial list of sellers Joshua's name is given as 'John'. Elsewhere it is 'Joshua'. (O2/55)
Presumably Isaac Essex has died by December 31, 1884. Sarah is his widow. Only 4 of Isaac's 9 children participate in the above transactions, which involve an L-shaped farm of 200 acres in Sections 15 and 16. I do not know how Isaac acquired that land.
GRAVE:
The following is in Volume XI of CEMETERIES OF WASHINGTON COUNTY, ARKANSAS (Northwest Arkansas Genealogical Society, 1991):
This broken grave marker, in the vicinity of Harmon, is just north and west of County Road #753 in S15, T17N, R31W. The grave (local residents say there were, perhaps, one or two others) is located just north of a large chicken house. Copied November 6, 1990 by Gail Scott.
Isaac Essex Aug 30, 1809 -- Sept 3, 188? broken
WIFE:
Isaac's mother was an active participant in the Friedens Evangelical Lutheran Church and two of his children were baptized there. One can reasonably conjecture that his wife Sarah was also a member of that congregation. Two girls named Sarah (Sarah Weizel and Sarah Weirich) were confirmed November 2, 1822. They are about the right age to be Isaac's wife and are reasonable candidates. 'Weizel' becomes 'Whit(e)sell', and information on the internet indicates that Sarah Weizel/Whitesell married someone else (Jacob Shepherd). I have not found any further information about Sarah Weirich. The records of Stoner's German Reformed Church in Allemance Co. indicate that a Sarah Shatterly was born there November 12, 1806. She also is a reasonable candidate for Isaac's wife, but I have not been able to find any evidence that she actually was his wife.
