He is not in the Slave Schedule. His father James McCurdy lives at 1432/347, and his brother John McCurdy lives at 1433/348. A cousin James McCurdy (son of Allen) lives at 1458/372. Hezekiah Appleby lives at 1456/370 and two of his sons live next to him.

In 1880 Mary R. McCurdy (59, Tn Tn Tn) is living in Crawford Co., Arkansas in the household of her son Samuel. Mary's two youngest children are also in the household.

MIDDLE NAME:

He is identified as 'King McCurdy' on the death certificate of his daughter Manerva Jane, who is Mary Jane Coleman on the death certificate.

WIVES:

William's wife Mary R. McCurdy was born 21 Mar 1828. William's oldest child was born 22 Aug 1842. If Mary were his mother, she would have been 14 year 5 months old when he was born. She would have married when she was 13. That is unlikely. William probably had another first wife by whom he had only one child. We know nothing about her.

BIRTH YEAR:

Almost everything on the photograph of Mary's tombstone at Find-a-Grave is easily readable, but her birth year could be 1823 or 1828. Find-a-Grave says 1823, but 1828 is more nearly compatible with her age in the 1850, 1860, and 1880 censuses and with the ages of Thomas and Emodela in the 1880 census entry (she is living with her son Samuel).

Assume that Mary was born 21 Mar 1828. Her husband William's oldest child was born 22 Aug 1842. If Mary were his mother, she would have been 14 year 5 months old when he was born. She would have married when she was 13. That is unlikely. William probably had another first wife by whom he had only one child. We know nothing about her.

If Mary were born 21 Mar 1823, the first child is not a problem. However, in this case Mary would have been 45 years 10 months old when her youngest child was born. It is unlikely for a woman to have a child at that age.

WHO IS HER FATHER?

The death certificate of her daughter Mary Jane Coleman says that the maiden name of her mother was Mary McCurdy ('Mary Jane' on the death certificate, 'Manerva Jane' elsewhere). The death certificate of her daughter Mary I. Morrison says that the maiden name of her mother was McCurdy.

In the 1840 census in Washington Co., Arkansas there are 5 men with surname McCurdy. Samuel has a slot available in 1830 and 1840 for a girl born in 1828. No other man has an available slot.
