A summary follows:
Charles Clabaugh was born in about 1784 in Frederick Co., Maryland. Around 1800 he migrated with his parents to Sevier Co. in eastern Tennessee, where his father had acquired land on Middle Creek. Charles married Elizabeth 'Betsey' Clendenan, daughter of John Clendenan, possibly as early as 1802 if the girl aged 16-18 in 1820 was their eldest child.
By 1810 Betsey's father John Clendenan had died. His patent for 212 acres on Flat Creek in Sevier Co. was thus issued to his heirs: Mary, James, John, Polly and Nancy Clendenan, Ester McGee, Jenny Beard, and Betsey Clabaugh.
By 1819 Charles and Betsey had moved to Warren Co., Tennessee, where he settled near Barren Fork of Collins Creek. In 1830 they were still in Warren Co. By 1840 son James B. Clabaugh had moved to DeKalb Co., Alabama. At some point Betsey died, and on November 30, 1843 in Bibb Co., Alabama Charles married Jane Wallace, a neighbor of his brother John Clabaugh. Charles's nephew Cumberland F. Clabaugh, a Justice of the Peace, performed the ceremony. Less than two years later, on September 29, 1845 Charles and Jane sold Jane's 100 acres on Sixmile Creek and moved to Missouri, where in 1850 they were living near his sons James B. and William in Dade Co.
