A summary follows:
John3 Clabough was born in Frederick Co., Maryland, probably in the early 1750s. As a young boy, he lived with his parents on the south side of Great Pipe Creek in Frederick (now Carroll) Co. In the mid-1770s he married Margaret Ferguson, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Ferguson.
In 1790 John Clabough was living with his family near Emmitsburg in the northernmost part of Frederick Co. near the Pennsylvania state line. In the 1790 census he is referred as "of Jno" to distinguish him from his cousin John "of Fredk". There is one male over 16, 4 males under 16, and 4 females in the household.
John and his brother Charles are in the 1800 census in Frederick Co., John in Emmitsburg and Charles in Taney. At some point in the early 1800s they and their in-laws Samuel and James Ferguson migrated southwestward to Sevier Co., Tennessee. Sevierville, the county seat, on the Little Pigeon River, was a small thriving town about 2 miles north of where the Clabaughs settled on Middle Creek.
On 16 Feb 1807 John Clabaugh, Sr., now in his 50s, had 126 acres surveyed on Middle Creek. A week later Charles Clabaugh, Sr. had 219 acres surveyed on Middle Creek. Over a year and a half later, when John Clabaugh's patent was issued by Gov. John Sevier on 29 Sep 1808, John had paid $12.70 and still owed $114.30. Charles, whose patent was issued the next day, had paid about $22 with $197 still due.
Of John3 and Margaret Clabaugh's children, eldest son Samuel Clabaugh married, probably in Maryland before moving to Tennessee, and lived in Sevier Co. the remainder of his life. Son John4 Clabaugh married shortly after arriving in Tennessee, about 1816 moved to the Territory of Alabama, and about 1849 moved to eastern Texas. Son William Clabaugh married and remained in Sevier Co. Son Charles Clabaugh married and by 1819 was living in Warren Co., Tennessee, later moving to Alabama and then by 1850 to Dade Co., Missouri. Of John3 and Margaret Clabaugh's presumed daughters nothing is known.
John3 Clabaugh is probably the elderly man in his 70s living in Sevier Co. in the household of Cumberland Clabaugh in the 1830 census. Presumably Margaret had died by then. No census records for Sevier Co. are available before 1830.
