A summary follows:

John Clabough2 was born about 1732, probably before his family immigrated to America. He lived his teenage years and adult life in the Monocacy River area of Maryland.

At the age of 10, in 1742, John moved to the wilderness of the Maryland Colony with his parents where they settled on 140 acres which his father leased from Lord Baltimore on the Monocacy Manor in what is now Frederick Co.

At some time before 1760 John Clabaugh moved his family 4 miles north of the Manor, settling on the south side of Great (Big) Pipe Creek near present-day Middlebury, Carroll Co. He and his brother Frederick participated in the French and Indian War (1755-1763). During the War of Independence John Clabaugh joined the militia and rose to the rank of sergeant in Capt. John Carmack's company. His name appears on a muster roll taken November 29, 1775.

John Clabaugh and his wife probably continued to live on their land on Great Pipe Creek. The records only confirm the name of one son John Clabaugh, who is noted as John "of Jno" to distinguish him from his cousin John "of Fredk". Charles Clabaugh was undoubtedly another son since he and John both migrated to Sevier Co., Tennessee. Charles was not the son of Frederick, whose children are well documented in his will. There were probably other children in the family whose names we do not know.

DEATH:

Betty Harrell says that John Clabaugh probably died before 1790 because he is not in the 1790 census. There is, however, a census entry in Frederick Co., Maryland in 1800 (1 male > 44, 1 female > 44, 1 male 16-25) that might be for him.
