A summary follows:
The earliest account of the German immigrants, Frederick and Mary Clabaugh, is in 1742 in the Colony of Maryland. On 11 Apr 1742 Frederick Clabaugh leased 150 acres in the Monocacy Manor, a large tract of about 10000 acres owned by Lord Baltimore and located in present-day Frederick Co. A tract of land could be leased in two different ways: a 21-year lease or a three-life lease (valid until the 3 people named in the lease have died). Frederick's lease was of the second type, and it indicates that in 1742 Frederick was probably in his mid-40s, his wife was 41, and one of his sons, John Clabaugh, was 10. John was probably the youngest child and was included in the lease on the theory that he would live the longest. There were other children. One was Frederick, and a third was probably William. This would agree with family tradition that three brothers came to America. The family had probably lived for several years somewhere else in Maryland or maybe Pennsylvania before they settled in the Monocacy Manor.
It is not known how long the family lived on the Manor, but it is known that by 1767 their lease had been sold. Prior to 1760 their son John had married and had moved to the Great (Big) Pipe Creek area about 4 miles north of the Manor. Frederick and Mary probably joined him there. It is known that Frederick had died by 1767 and that Mary died sometime after 1767.
