Notes
General:
In the census the second wife of Martin Hitt is Mary Anne. Cemetery records indicate that Mary A. Hitt died August 17, 1891. The will of Mary A. Hitt was admitted to probate on August 26, 1891. Neither the will nor the probate proceedings mention Martin Hitt, who died January 8, 1892 according to the same cemetery records.
Based on the close proximity of the two dates, August 17 and August 26, one can conjecture that the Mary A. Hitt of the will is Martin Hitt's second wife, even though it seems strange that she writes a will during his lifetime and that he is not mentioned in the proceedings. It might be that his death date is wrong and that he died before she did.
PROBATE:
Probate records for Mary A. Hitt are in Box 222, Package 12 (image 692/1380) of Laurens Co. Estate Papers. They can be seen online at familysearch.org.
Mary A. Hitt signed her will December 15, 1888 in the presence of O. G. Thompson, J. Waddy Thompson, and Sarri Thompson. She left her entire estate, real and personal, to her beloved nephew Jas. I. Cook, son of her deceased sister Susan C. Cook. If he dies without issue, then at his death the said property is to become the property of her beloved sister Nannie P. Henderson. No executor was named in the will.
On August 26, 1891 the will was admitted to probate on the oaths of O. G. Thompson and J. W. Thompson and A. Cook obtained letters testimentary.
On September 16, 1891 A. Cook, J. D. Mock, and O. G. Thompson are bound to the Judge of Probate of Laurens Co. in the amount of $500 to guarantee that A. Cook will faithfully perform his duties as administrator of the estate.
A. Cook is later referred to as Abraham Cook, and Mary A. Hitt is later referred to as Mrs. Mary Hitt.
An appraisal is dated September 17, 1891. The amount is $132.25. There is no report of a sale. The estate was settled in 1892 or 1893.
