CENSUS:

In 1860 Parker S. Grinstead and his wife Mary A. are living in Casey Co., Kentucky in the household of his father.

In 1870 Mary A. Dungan (30, FW, Ky) is living in Pulaski Co., Kentucky in the household of William Bryant (60, Va, $1320/$1600, farmer), his wife Sarah and 4 children. Mary A. Dungan has 2 children: Ida B. Dungan (3, FW, Ky) and Alonzo J. E. Dungan (1, MW, Ky).

In 1880 Mary A. is living in Pulaski Co. with her third husband William Vanhook.

"The Roster of Union Soldiers 1861--1865 Kentucky, Tennessee":

Parker H. (S.) Grimstead 1st Cav. Co. A

His brother Thomas R. is also in the 1st Cavalry and his brother Elihu is in the 8th Cavalry.

According to "Official Army Register of the Volunteer Force of the United States Army 1861--1865", Volume IV, the First Cavalry Regiment was organized at Liberty, Burkesville and Monticello, Kentucky in October 1861 to serve three years. The original members (except veterans) were mustered out December 31, 1864 by reason of expiration of term of service, and the veterans and recruits consolidated into a battalion of three companies and retained in service until September 20, 1865, when it was mustered out in accordance with orders from the War Department.

Parker H. Grenslead, private, enrolled July 27, 1861, mustered in October 28, 1861 at Camp Dick Robinson for 3 years; discharged on surgeon's certificate of disability July 1862.

PENSION:

Dora Lipps has sent me a document from the National Archives entitled "Declaration for Pension of Children under Sixteen years of age." On August 17, 1889 Obedience A. Black states under oath that she is a resident of Newell, Pulaski Co., Kentucky and that she is 27 years old. Her father, Parker S. Grinsted, enrolled at Camp Dick Roberson on October 28, 1861 in Co. A, 1 Ky vol Cavl and died November 15, 1863 "from disease contracted in the U. S. Service". He was a private at the time of his death and left a widow, who married John F. B. Dungan January 16, 1866. The soldier's only surviving legitimate children under 16 years of age at the time of his death are listed in the document as

William E. Grinsted, born March 26, 1858, died September 27, 1859,
Theophilis L. Grinsted, born April 29, 1860, died January 27, 1861, and
Obedience A. Black, born January 15, 1862.

The document states "that the father was married under the name of Parker S. Grinsted to Mary A. Bryant, there being no legal barrier to such marriage; that the said children have not aided or abetted the rebellion; and that no prior application has been filed by any of the parties." The claimant, Obedience A. Black, appoints Louisa Cox, who resides in Casey Co. and whose post office address is Newel, Pulaski Co., as her attorney to prosecute her claim. Attested by Madison G. Bryant and Joe T. Kennedy. Marion Black also personally appeared.

BIRTH PLACE:

Parker S. Grinstead was born in 1836. The 1850 census says that he was born in Virginia. His marriage record says that he was born in Pulaski Co., but in 1840 his father and uncles were living in Madison Co. Two of John Parker Grinstead's children were born in Madison Co. in 1833 and in 1836. We don't really know when the brothers arrived in Kentucky or where they first settled or if they came together or separately.
