Notes
General:
The following is on pages 91-92 of an article by Douglas Richardson in The New England Historical and Genealogical Register (Vol 153 (1999), pgs 81-96). The article is entitled "THE ENGLISH ORIGIN AND ANCESTRY OF THE PARKER BROTHERS OF MASSACHUSETTS and of their Probable Aunt, Sarah Parker, Wife of Edward Converse".

"JOSEPH PARKER, immigrant to New England, bp. at Great Burstead 1 Sept. 1622, as "son of John and Ann Parker"; d. in 1690. He m. (1) evidently at Great Burstead, 16 April 1650, Margaret Puttow, and they came to New England by 1652. He m. (2) at Chelmsford, Mass., 19 Nov 1683, Hannah (Jenkins) Balke, widow of Capt. John Balke (or Bake) of Chelmsford and daughter of Joel and Sarah (Gilbert) Jenkins of Braintree and Malden, Mass. Hannah m. (3) 8 Jan 1690/1, at Concord, as his 2nd wife, Robert Blood, Sr., of Ruddington, Nottingham, and Concord, Mass., who d. at Concord 22 Oct 1701. Hannah d. there 13 Dec. 1716.

"Joseph Parker resided successively at Woburn, Chelmsford, Groton, Dunstable, and again at Chelmsford, Mass. He had children with both wives."

PARKER in AMERICA:

An account of Joseph and his descendants is on pages 541-45 in Parker in America, which can be seen at http://jenningsweb.us/ParkerInAmerica.html. See notes under Joseph's brother Abraham for more details. Joseph was one of five men with surname Parker who were early settlers in Massachusetts.

Some researchers think that Joseph Parker married Rebecca Reed in Chelmsford in 1656, but the groom was probably Joseph Parkhurst. For a discussion of this matter and the surname of Joseph Parker's second wife see Parker in America The following is part of the discussion there of Joseph Parker:

JOSEPH PARKER, supposed to have been a bro. of Abraham, Jacob and James, [who respectively stand at the head of the three previous groups] is first found in Chelmsford. His first six chn. are recorded there. His wife Margaret was admitted to the church in that town on a date believed to be June 11, 1656. Another entry in Rev. John Fisk's note is as follows: "Joseph Parker's wife and her chn. dismissed to the church in Groton" May 28, 1665. The latter town was his home for some years, but he rem. '97- perhaps about 1673 '97- to Dunstable. The "Shattuck Genealogy" says he was constable there from 1675 to 1682. As early as 1684 he again located in Chelmsford and perhaps res. there continuously until his d. He was of Chelmsford in 1684 when he deeded (26-459) land to his dau. Anna, still there 1688 when he sold land to John Alexander, and there July 24, 1690, when he sold to Richard Stratton. His d. followed soon after the last date, if the Probate papers are right in saying he d. in 1690. There is other evidence to corroborate the last statement, but no visible step was taken to settle his estate until the inventory was taken Dec. 25, 1697. The next month, Jan. 25, Samuel Goodkin of Cambridge, was appointed administrator with Daniel Champney and Israel Cheever of the same place, as sureties. Joseph had left many hundred acres of land, situated in Chelmsford, Groton and Dunstable, and final settlement was long delayed. In 1714 Goodkin asked to be discharged from his office and Joseph Parker of Groton, "the only son," was appointed in his place. As late as 1729 one of his grs. did not consider the estate as fully settled, as is shown by his petition.

[Joseph Parker married Hannah Balke in Chelmsford November 19, 1683, and after his death she married Robert Blood, Sr. of Concord, at Concord, Jan. 8, 1690/91).]

In 1701 (Middlesex deed 13-64) Robert Blood deeded lands in Groton to "my chn, the daus. of Hannah, my w., viz.: Elizabeth Parker and Margaret Parker." (At this time Joseph(2) Parker was living.) Again, Sept. 30, 1684 (deed 13-196), Joseph Parker, Sr., and w. Hannah, sold lands. This proves that he then had a w. of that name. After the above two daus. were m., they quit-claimed to Benjamin Parker of Groton (their half-nephew) their rights in the estate of their f., Joseph Parker, late of Chelmsford (deed 41-472).

Elizabeth, dau. of Joseph and Hannah Parker, was b. in Chelmsford Dec. 4, 1684, but of Margaret's birth I find no sign.

Hannah, wid. of Joseph Parker, after her m. to Robert Blood and his death, remained wid. Blood until her own decease, Dec. 13, 1716. Thomas Estabrook, her s.-in-law, was appointed administrator of her estate Dec. 31, 1716.

At a general town meeting of the freeholders of Chelmsford the second day of March Anno Domini 1741/42 a committee was appointed to transcribe the First Book of Records to preserve the said records for the future (pg 1, image 22/230). On page 22 (image 33/230) in a comment dated 28 Dec 1747 it is pointed out that the First Book of Records was in many places torn and defaced, that in other places the births and deaths were wholly lost, and that in some places the month or year was missing.
