WIFE:

Archibald married Patsy Cowan August 31, 1826. Martha and Patsy are presumably the same person.

LAND:

The following tracts are in Wayne Co., Kentucky:

On January 21, 1837 John Bond and Mary Ann, his wife, sold to Allen R. West, Archibald Hinds, John B. Hinds, and Sarah Mercer for $600 all their right and claim to the estate both real and personal and mixed which belonged to them by virtue of the last will of Joseph Hinds, dec'd. (Bk G, pgs 171-72) John Bond's wife is Marian Brady. See Joseph Hind's will.

On March 20, 1848 R. C. Mercer sold to Archibald Hinds for $150 "all my interest in the estate of Joseph Hinds, dec'd". (Bk K, pg 179) R. C. Mercer is a son of Sarah Hinds and Nicholas Mercer.

By 1850 Archibald is living on the 206 acre plantation which the heirs of Joseph Hinds purchased from James Ward in 1821 (Bk C, pgs 212-13) and which is known as the Nancy Johnson tract. Ownership is shared among numerous heirs. Several transactions in 1850 and in 1851 suggest that Archibald, his brother John B. Hinds, and his brother-in-law John S. Wray are trying to increase their share of the ownership of where they themselves live.

On October 22, 1850 Benjamin Hinds of Miller Co., Missouri (one of the sons, heirs and legatees of Joseph Hinds, dec'd) sold to Archibald Hinds of Wayne Co. for $86 his undivided interest and share as one of the heirs and legatees as aforesaid in and to a certain tract of land on the south side of the Cumberland River containing 206 acres more or less and surveyed in the name of Nancy Johnson and patented in the name of John Martin on Feb'y 4, 1818 and deeded to the heirs of Joseph Hinds, dec'd, by James Ward and wife on February 13, 1821, which sale is recorded in Book C, pages 212-13. The property is described by metes and bounds, and it adjoins the property of Hugh Pierce. (Bk L, pgs 122-23)

On the same date (October 22, 1850) Richard C. Mercer and B. W. S. Mercer (heirs of Sarah Mercer, who was one of the daughters and heirs of Joseph Hinds, dec'd, late of Wayne Co., Ky) of Wayne Co. sold to Archibald Hinds of Wayne Co. for $54 their undivided interest and share in the same tract described in a deed made that same day from Benjamin Hinds to Archibald Hinds containing 206 acres more or less and whereon Archibald Hinds was then living. (Bk L, pgs 124-25)

On January 8, 1851 John S. Wray and Elizabeth Wray, his wife, of Wayne Co., Kentucky sold to Archibald Hinds of Wayne Co. for $500 a tract of 206 acres on the south side of Cumberland River on the right hand side of the big road leading from Monticello to Somerset whereon said Hinds lately resided and known as the Nancy Johnson tract and lying between the farm on which said Wray was then living and Jesse C. Flinn's. John S. Wray acquired the property as follows:
Allen R. West July 25, 1838
Allen R. West March 30, 1844
John B. Hinds November 26, 1838
Joseph M. Johnson January 13, 1841. (Bk L, pgs 168-69)

On the same date (January 8, 1851) John B. Hinds and Mariah Hinds, his wife, (legatees, heirs, and representatives of Joseph Hinds, dec'd) of Wayne Co., Kentucky sold to Archibald Hinds of Wayne Co. for $85 their 1/14 part and share in a tract of land on the south side of Cumberland River on the right hand side of the big road leading from Monticello to Somerset between the farm where John S. Wray was then living and Jesse C. Flinn and known as the Nancy Johnson tract and whereon the said Hinds lately resided". (Bk L, pgs 174-75)

On January 9, 1851 Archibald Hinds of Wayne Co. paid $85 to Rhoda Payne and $56 to Esom Bolen and Elizabeth Ann Bolen, late Elizabeth Ann Johnson, all of Wayne Co. and heirs of Joseph Hinds, dec'd, for their interest in and to a tract of 206 acres, more or less, on the waters of Cumberland River patented in the name of John Martin, ass'ee of Nancy Fry, formerly Nancy Johnson, by patent dated Feb'y 4, 1818. Rhoda Payne is a daughter of Joseph Hinds, dec'd, and Elizabeth Ann Bolen, late Johnson, is one of the daughters of Pleasant S. Johnson and Mary Johnson, late Hinds, who was also a daughter of Joseph Hinds, dec'd. Pleasant S. Johnson purchased the interest of Levi S. Hinds in and to the same tract. (Bk M, pgs 349-50)

On November 29, 1853 Henry Gibson and Elizabeth Ann Gibson, his wife (late Elizabeth Ann Johnson), daughter and heir of Mary Johnson, wife of Pleasant S. Johnson, who was a daughter and heir of Joseph Hinds, dec'd, late of Wayne Co. sold to Archibald Hinds of Wayne Co. for $86 their undivided interest in the Nancy Johnson tract of 206 acres, more or less. That tract adjoins the tract where Archibald then lived. They also conveyed the interest which she inherited from her father Pleasant S. Johnson which he obtained by deed from Levi Hinds, Jr. (Bk M, pgs 163-64) The interest being sold here is the same as that already sold on January 9, 1851 (Bk M, pgs 349-50).

On April 7, 1854 Archibald Hinds sold to John S. Wray for $616.80 "four undivided interests and shares which I hold by purchase from the heirs of Joseph Hinds, dec'd, in and to the 206 tract on which I now live known by the Nancy Johnson tract in Wayne Co., Ky". (Bk M, pg 190) Perhaps by 1854 Archibald had fallen on hard times and had to abandon his goal of owning his own farm. He still owned 4 1/3 shares, which he sold to John S. Wray January 10, 1859. After that he had nothing.

TAX ROLLS:

Archibald is on the Wayne Co. tax roll for the first time in 1817. He has nothing of taxable value. Until 1827 he routinely has 1 horse and no slaves, and in 1828 he has 2 horses and 1 slave. His taxable worth gradually increases and in 1837 he has 4 horses and 4 slaves. He is on the tax rolls as a landowner for the first time in 1838. He is said to own 250 acres on the Cumberland River worth $615 in 1838 and in 1839. He has had a shared interest in the lands of his father for many years, and this land is probably one of his father's plantations.

DEATH:

Archibald Hinds is on the Wayne Co. tax roll in 1860 and in 1861. In 1860 he owns 9 acres on Cumberland River worth $1000, 1 horse worth $60, 10 cattle worth $50, 8 hogs, 500 bushels of corn, and 30 bushels of wheat. His total worth is $1110. He is absent in 1862 and in 1863. Presumably he died in about 1862.
