TAX ROLLS:
Benjamin Hinds appears on the Wayne County tax roll for the first time in 1808. He is a white male over 21 and owns one horse. If he became 21 in 1808, he was born about 1787. He appears regularly until 1843. He becomes a landowner in 1823. He owns a tract of about 62 acres near the Cumberland River which was entered, surveyed, and patented in the name of T. Mathes. Usually he owns 1 or 2 horses, and from time to time he owns 1 or 2 slaves. Generally he owns no slaves.
LAND in KENTUCKY:
The following tracts are in Wayne Co.:
On May 16, 1825 Joel Bond and Jane, his wife, sold 77 acres on the waters of the Cumberland River to her brother Benjamin Hinds for $400. It began at William Bond's corner on the bank of the river. (Bk D, pgs 162-63) On May 19, 1826 Benjamin Hinds and Nancy, his wife, sold the same tract (77 1/2 acres) to Isaac Bond for $400. (Bk D, pgs 253-54)
On February 13, 1826 William McHenry and Sarah, his wife, sold 62 acres on the Cumberland River to Benjamin Hinds for $500. (Bk D, pgs 259-60) The 1824 tax roll specifically mentions the T. Mathes tract (70 acres). It isn't obvious why it is on the tax roll before the deed records indicate that Benjamin Hinds bought it. On October 11, 1843, Benjamin Hinds and Nancy, his wife, sold their 62 acre tract to William J. Kindrick and James G. Cecil for $300. It is said to be on the waters of the Cumberland River and is described by metes and bounds. (Bk J, pgs 232-33)
MISSOURI:
Benjamin Hinds (old Benjamin) is on the tax roll of Wayne Co., Kentucky for the last time in 1843, and in October 1843 he sold the 62 acre tract that he had bought in 1826. He probably moved to Missouri about 1844, a decade later than the arrival of his second cousin, young Benjamin Hinds. I am assuming that the following tracts were granted to old Benjamin, but some of them may have been granted to his cousin. The first 3 were made to Benjamin Hinds of Miller Co. and the last to Benjamin Hindes of Miller Co.

WHICH JOSEPH IS HIS FATHER?
There are two Benjamin Hinds who grew up in Wayne Co in the early 19th century. Old Benjamin was born about 1786 and married Nancy Fox in 1819. Young Benjamin was born in 1803 and married Jane N. Bond in 1826. They were second cousins and both their fathers were named Joseph. Both Benjamins migrated to Miller Co., Missouri and died there in the 1850's. There is no conclusive evidence on the basis of which to decide which Benjamin is the son of which Joseph. Lamentably the deeds in which Benjamin, son of Capt. Joseph, sold his inherited property in Wayne Co. to his brother and brothers-in-law don't mention his wife, as is usual, and thus we don't know for sure which Benjamin is the seller.
We have the 1810 census for Joseph, Jr. (father of Stephen) and the 1810 and 1820 censuses for Capt. Joseph (father of Archibald). In the 1810 census for Joseph, Jr. there are 2 male slots taken up by George and Stephen, thus no room for either old Benjamin or young Benjamin. Although old Benjamin is not yet married and might reasonably be living with his parents, he is certainly old enough to have left and be living elsewhere, maybe with a cousin in Tennessee. There is no plausible 'Benjamin Hinds' in the 1810 census for him. On the other hand young Benjamin is only 6 and we would certainly expect him to be at home. This motivates assigning him to Capt. Joseph, who in 1810 has an available slot for a 6 year old boy. A problem with this assignment is that in 1820 there is no slot for a 16 year old boy in the household of Capt. Joseph. He might, however, be living with his sister Polly and her husband Pleasant S. Johnson, who live close to Capt. Joseph and who have an otherwise unexplained 16-26 male in their household. All in all I think the pairings old Benj./Joseph, Jr. and young Benj./Capt. Joseph are more plausible relative to the census.
Moreover in the public record old Benjamin has several associations with the children of Joseph, Jr. and none with those of Capt. Joseph. Young Benjamin has one association with each -- in Miller Co., he is living next to Joel Bond (son-in-law of Joseph, Jr.), but in Adams Co., Illinois in 1830 he is living next to Elliot P. Wade and probably next to John Brady (both clearly related to Capt. Joseph).
BIRTH PLACE:
Benjamin ssid once in the census that he was born in North Carolina. In the 1880 and 1900 censuses his children say that he was born in North Carolina.
