WHICH JOHN HINDS?
Eight children of the immigrant James Hinds/Haines/Haynes were baptized in Salem, Massachusetts. His eldest son John was baptized there 28 Aug 1639, and his son James was baptized 27 Feb 1647/48.
There are two relevant John Hinds in the historical record.
On pages 7-9 of History and Genealogy of the Hinds Family by Albert Henry Hinds, published in 1899, the author describes a John Hinds who spent his whole life in Massachusetts and died in 1720 in Lancaster, Massachusetts. The book is almost entirely about the descendants of this John Hinds, who the author believes is the eldest son of the immigrant James Hinds who was baptized in 1639 in Salem.
On page 78 of History of Elizabeth, New Jersey by Rev. Edwin F. Hatfield, published in 1868, the author says that John Hinds and his brother James were "East Enders" from Long Island and that they were sons of James Hinds, "who came over from England to Salem, Mass., as early as 1637, when he was admitted a freeman. He married in 1638, and, at an early day, removed to Southold, L. I., where he died." John was a cooper and came to Elizabeth about ten years earlier than his brother James, who was also a cooper. In 1677 James received a warrant for 120 acres of land, and in 1676 he purchased his house, garden, orchard, and house-lot in Elizabeth Town.
"John Hinds, the son of James, Sen'r, of Southold, was bred a cooper. No record remains of his allotments of land. He married Mary, a daughter of Goodman Thompson, and their daughter had been married, as early as 1700, to Isaac Whitehead, Jr. He was a constable of the town in 1710 and 1711. A curious record of him occurs in the Ledger of Rev. John Harriman: 1694/5 ffeb. 28, pr acco't of teaching my son Samuel the mistery of a cooper, tho'h not pformed according to bargain---£4.00.00."
Hatfield describes Goodman Thompson on page 94. He was a deputy of Elizabeth Town in 1672. Isaac Whitehead, Jr. owned property that adjoined James Hinds. He is described on page 100. Rev. Harriman is mentioned numerous times.
On page 57 Hatfield lists John Haynes among 65 inhabitants of Elizabeth Town who swear an oath of allegiance and fidelity to King Charles II in 1665.
The article in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register states that the immigrant James Hinds was a cooper by profession, and his will leaves "my tooles that belong to my calling" to his eldest son John.
Rev. Harriman's ledger is documentary evidence that John Hinds in Elizabeth Town was a cooper. It seems highly likely that these two Johns are the same person and that the John Hinds who remained in Massachusetts is a different person.
ELIZABETH TOWN, NEW JERSEY:
History of Elizabeth, New Jersey by Rev. Edwin F. Hatfield, published in 1868:
Pages 269-70: "William Richardson was a man in humble condition, who had died before Aug. 6, 1696, when his goods were appraised by Isaac Whitehead and John Hinds, at £5.18.9. His annual subscription in 1694, to Mr. Harriman, was 3s."
Pages 284-85: James Hinds (£0.15.0), John Hinds (£0.12.0), and Mr. Isaac Whitehead (£0.10.0) are in a list of 99 subscribers to the support of Rev. Harriman in 1694. Jonathan Hinds (£0.6.0) and 14 others were added at the town meeting March 11, 1700/01.

15 Jul 1695: John Hindes is one of two appraisers of the estate of Thomas Lee of Elizabethtown (£30.1.-, all personal). [Thomas Lee is the father of the probable wife of John's nephew James.]
