S. E. Jobe is presumably Sarah. She is a daughter, not a son. J. R. Jobe is a son-in-law, not a son.

WHO ARE HIS PARENTS?

We have no direct evidence about who Francis Marion's parents were. We know from the census that he was born in Kentucky in about 1821, and we know that he married in Wayne Co. It seems highly likely that he is part of the large Hinds family in Wayne Co. Less likely but possible is that he is part of the Hines family of Pulaski Co. Wayne and Pulaski are adjoining counties.

In the 1830 census in Wayne Co. only George Hinds and Martha Hinds have an available slot for a 9-year-old male which is not otherwise filled. Martha is the second wife and now widow of Samuel Hinds.

Argument that Francis Marion is a son of Samuel Hinds:

No documentary evidence connects Francis Marion with George Hinds. He (Francis Marion) is not in the May 24, 1871 deed in which one of the heirs of George and Mary Hinds buys the interests of the other heirs. His absence suggests but does not prove that he is not a son of George. George's son James is also absent.

Francis Marion was born in about 1821. He is plausibly a child of Samuel Hinds and his second wife, who were married 10 Aug 1820.

Francis Marion is indirectly connected to Samuel Hinds in two ways. Francis Marion married in Wayne Co. in 1839 but by 1840 was living in Johnson Co., Illinois, where he spent the rest of his life. In 1846 Matthew W. Gray and Abigail Gray, his wife, of Johnson Co., Illinois appointed Socrates Hinds of Wayne Co. to sell their interest in "an undivided tract about 12 miles from Monticello on the road to Somerset, where Samuel Hinds lived and died". Abigail is a daughter of Samuel Hinds by his second wife, and Socrates Hinds is probably the youngest son of Samuel Hinds and his first wife. Matthew Gray and Abigail were in Wayne Co. in 1840 and in Fayette Co., Illinois in 1850. Why were they in Johnson Co. in 1846? A plausible explanation is that Abigail and Francis Marion are siblings.

Secondly, Francis Marion named one of his children Socrates. Socrates was not a common name in the 19th century, but if Francis Marion is a son of Samuel, old Socrates is his older half-brother, born only a few years earlier, and it would be very natural to name a son for him. If Francis Marion were a son of George, he would be naming his son for a first cousin once removed, which seems much less natural. Of course, it is possible that Francis Marion named his son Socrates just because he liked 'Socrates'.

On 6 Aug 1847 Mary M. McGee sold "a 1/11th interest in the lands of Samuel Hinds on the Cumberland River". She says that she is the daughter and only heir of Samuel McGee, deceased, who married a daughter of Samuel Hinds. This deed suggests that Samuel Hinds had 11 children who were either alive or had heirs at the time of his death. The naming argument just presented indicates that either both Socrates and Francis Marion are sons of Samuel or neither one is. Without them Samuel has 10 children; with them he has 12. Eleven would be ideal.

Argument that Francis Marion is a son of George Hinds:

As of September 2021 a 2-greatgranddaughter of Francis Marion, whom I will call Verna, has shared with me the results of her autosomal DNA test done by Ancestry. Verna has documentary evidence that Francis Marion is her 2-greatgrandfather. The ThruLines feature of her report shows clearly that she is a descendant of Joseph Hinds II (1737-1815). ThruLines regards her as a descendant of George Hinds, a son of Joseph III, and she has shared DNA with, that is, is a match with, 137 descendants of Joseph III's siblings. They include 22 descendants of Joseph II's son Samuel.

In order to show that Francis Marion is a son of George Hinds, it would be sufficient to show that he is a son of George's wife Mary Hinkle. So, who is Mary Hinkle? ThruLines says that she is a member of the extensively studied family consisting of descendants of the Rev. Anthony Jacob Henckel, a Lutheran minister who immigrated to America from Germany in 1717. In The Henckel Genealogy, published in 1964, Rev. John Henkle (1774-1803) is person # 529. He married Magdalena Landes, a daughter of Henry Landes. He is described on page 214, and his 6 children are described on page 249.

Verna is a match with 14 descendants of siblings of Rev. John Henkle, and she is a match with 11 descendants of Henry Weber Landes apart from descendants of Magdalena herself.

Rev. John Henkle was born in 1774 and died in 1803 in Pendleton Co., West Virginia. He had 6 children in his short life according to HG (Henckel Genealogy). The five that we know something about went to Indiana and died there. There's no mention of a Mary or her probable sister Charity. They (Mary and Charity) were born about 1795, so they are the right age to be children of Rev. John Hinkle. If Mary and Charity were children of Rev. John, how did they get to Kentucky? Women did not travel alone in the 19th century.

There is a George Hinkle in the tax lists of Wayne Co. from 1804 until 1809. He is the logical candidate for the father of Mary and Charity Hinkle, but he is too old to be a son of Rev. John Hinkle. Rev. John did not have a brother named George, according to HG.
