LAND in MAURY CO., TENNESSEE:

On July 10, 1788 Joseph Hinds received a grant of 5000 acres from the state of North Carolina in the Middle District of Tennessee on both sides of the Duck River. See notes under Joseph Hinds II (1737 - ~1815) for details. In July 1802 Joseph sold the 5000-acre tract to 7 different individuals. On July 30, 1802 Simeon Hinds of Jackson Co., Tennessee bought 300 acres on the east side of the original tract.

On January 1, 1811 Simeon Hinds of Overton Co., Tennessee sells to Reuben Reves of Maury Co., Tennessee for $400 to him in hand paid a tract of 100 acres in Middle District on Duck River "being a part of a five thousand acre tract granted to Joseph Hinds, Senr, by a Patent Grant No 83, dated July 10th 1788". The tract being conveyed begins on the south bank of the Duck River at a corner of the 5000-acre tract, thence N30E 100 poles, thence west 193 poles, thence south 160 poles, thence east 150 poles to the boundary line of the original survey, thence to the beginning. Signed by Simeon Hinds. Witnessed by Joseph Scott and Edmund Harris. (Maury Co., Tennessee Deed Records, Bk C, pg 257, deed # C397, image 136/584)

I have not been able to determine how Simeon disposed of the remaining 200 acres of his 300-acre tract.

SOURCE:

The information about Simeon and his progeny comes from an article entitled "Hinds Family" by Dero A. Darwin, Jr. in History of Overton County, Tennessee, volume 1. There is no indication as to when the article was written or the relationship of the author to the family. It contains several errors.

The article begins as follows: "Simeon and John Hinds were early land owners in what is now Overton County. On June 24, 1793 John Hinds and Francis Mayberry acquired 4400 acres on Wolf River from the State of North Carolina (Deed Book C, page 75) and on December 7, 1796 Simeon Hinds was granted 200 acres on Flat Creek by the State of North Carolina (Deed Book B, page 277). They were sons of Joseph Hinds (b. June 17, 1737, d. ca. 1812, Knox County, TN) . . ." Later it states about Simeon: "Simeon Hinds was wounded by Indians while serving as a Captain in the Tennessee Militia during the War of 1812."

The will of Joseph Hinds, dated March 19, 1812, is recorded in Wayne Co., Kentucky, and it was proved there in 1815 by the June court. He had lived there since the early 1800's. Thus it is probable that he died in Wayne Co. The will names the children; it mentions Simeon but not John. John is John Henry Hinds (1745--about 1811); he is Simeon's uncle.
