CAROLINE CO., VIRGINIA LAND TAX LIST:
Land tax records are available from 1782 onward. The first list of proprietors is for 1787 and prior to then only transactions are available. In 1798 Elijah Carnal inherits 121 acres from his father's estate, and from 1799 to 1806 he has 121 acres. In 1807 he acquires 50 acres from Moses Jones and until 1810 he has 171 acres. In 1811 he sells 48.5 acres to Wm. Middlebrook, Jr. (probably the 50 acres he bought in 1807). He is said to have 122.5 acres. In 1816 he transfers 121 acres to his brother Patrick. He does not appear subsequently in the land tax list. Elijah's land is said to be 10 miles southwest of the courthouse and bounded by Patrick Carnal. In 1814 residence is indicated for the first time and Elijah lives in Kentucky. The tax list says that Patrick will pay the tax.
CAROLINE CO. PERSONAL TAX LIST:
Personal tax records are available from 1783 onward. Elijah Carnal is in the Caroline Co. Personal Tax List for the first time in 1788 as a white tithable greater than 16 in the household of his father William Carnal. If he became 16 in 1788, he was born about 1772. He remains in his father's household until 1796 and has an entry of his own for the first time in 1797, which is the first year that his father is not is the list. He usually has 2 or 3 slaves over 12, occasionally only 1, and at first he has 2 horses/mules and then 3 or 4. He is in the list from 1797 to 1807. No list is available for 1808. Elijah is missing in 1809 and he appears for the last time in 1810.
