TAX ROLLS:

Joseph Hinds appears on the tax rolls of Wayne Co. for the first time in 1803 as "Jos. Hinds minor". He is already at least 21 years old. He has entered 100 acres of third rate land on Meadow Mile Creek (still not surveyed or patented), and he has one horse. In 1804 he is absent from the rolls, and in 1806 he has entered and had surveyed 100 acres of third rate land on Bone Creek (not patented). His household is designated "21024" meaning 2 white males over 21, 1 white male between 16 and 21, 2 blacks, and 4 horses. In general his entries on the tax rolls are not particularly consistent. In 1808 and in 1809 he is absent, and then in 1810 he has no land and his household is "0113" meaning no white males over 21, 1 black, 3 horses. He is absent in 1811, in 1813 he is "1001" (1 white male over 21, no blacks, 1 horse) and has no land, and in 1814 (his last year on the tax roll) he has 200 acres on Cub Creek worth $300 and no blacks and no horses. In the latter two years he is designated "Joseph Hinds, younger".

We know that in 1815 he was in Madison County because of the deed mentioned in the notes attached to his father, but he does not appear on the tax rolls in that county until 1818. He is present each year until 1822, absent in 1823 and in 1824, and present again for the last time in 1825. He is usually the owner of 53 acres on Paint Lick or Silver Creek, one or two horses, and no slaves.

A Joseph Hinds was also present in Madison County in 1809.

There are no land transactions for Joseph Hinds in the Madison Co. Deed Records. However on April 30, 1823 Joseph A. Hinds conveys to Doven Hendron "one horse beast, a mare, three heads of cattle, 20 head of hogs, four beds and furniture and all my other household and kitchen furniture". Hendron is security for Hinds in the Bank of the Commonwealth of Kentucky for about $100 and is about to become security for Hinds in a two year Replevin Bond to James Sanderson his assignee for about $100. If Hinds saves Hendron harmless relative to said securityships, the obligation to be void, otherwise to remain in force. Signed Joseph (his + mark) A. Hinds. (P/365)

LAND IN MISSOURI:

On April 6, 1825 Joseph Hinds purchases for $113.25 a tract of 113 1/4 acres on Saline Creek in Perry Co., Missouri from 3 heirs of Joseph Layton, deceased (Deed Book 1, pg 131). See "Abstracts of Perry Co., Missouri, Deeds, 1821-1844" (Bill Eddleman, 2004).
