WHO WAS HER HUSBAND?
Earl J. Hitt's database 'hitthaynie' says she married Reuben Jeffries but offers no evidence.
Her father's will makes it clear that she married a man named Jeffries. There are several men named Jeffries in the Culpeper Personal Property Tax List from 1811 to 1823. From 1811 onward Reuben Jeffries seems to be well established (5 slaves and 5 horses in 1812). From 1819 to 1822 Reuben and Reuben, Jr. are both in the tax list. Reuben, Jr. has the typical tax profile of a young man who is just starting out on his own (no slaves, one horse). In the 19th century 'Junior' did not necesarily mean 'son of'. It was often used to designate the younger of 2 men of the same name. Because Reuben and Reuben, Jr. always have contiguous entries in the tax list, I suspect that Reuben, Jr. is the son of Rueben. Reuben, Jr. is not in the list in 1823, and I have not seen the list after 1823.
I have seen abstracts of marriage records for Culpeper Co. Numerous Jeffries are in the list in the period 1780 to 1850 but neither Reuben is there. The marriage records suggest that all the other men in the tax list named Jeffries who might be the husband of Elizabeth Hitt married someone else.
It seems to me likely that she married Reuben Jeffries, Jr.
