LAND:

The following 9 tracts in Sumter Co., Alabama were patented to Henry Hitt. It is not clear whether the patentee was Henry H. Hitt or Henry J. Hitt. The last two were jointly patented with another party. The two before them (S14, S32) were sold in 1838. Apart from those two I did not find any record of any tract having been sold. The first four (S3, S10) are essentially contiguous.

WHO WAS HIS FATHER?

Henry H. Hitt was married to Francis "Fanny" Hitt. The wording in 6/606 (Sumter County, Alabama Orphans' Court Records, Vol 6, pg 606) relative to the estate of Benjamin B. Hitt implies that Henry H. is his son. Henry H. is also mentioned relative to the estate of John Hitt (6/172) which together with 6/606 implies that he is John Hitt's son-in-law.

EARL J. HITT:

The following was copied from the database of Earl J. Hitt in WorldConnect (no longer existent):

Henry is believed to be the son of Benjamin and Amelia "Millie" (Rushing) Hitt although compelling proof has not been found.
Henry is listed on the voters listing for Sumter County on 1 March 1847 where he was assessed taxes for the real estate he owned in Sumter County in 1850.
Henry moved his family to Smith County, Texas before March 1852, because on that date, Henry, his wife Frances, and his children joined the Harris Creek Baptist Church. In May 1853, the records for Harris Creek Baptist Church (now First Baptist Church, Winona, Texas) show a Letter of Dismission for the following named Brothers, Sisters, viz, Alfred Hitt, Alsey Hitt, Joseph Jarmon, Jucinda Jarmon, Wm Buckholts, Matilda Buckholts, Lazarus Hitt, Ruthy Hitt, Henry Hitt, Francis Hitt, John Hitt, Wm H. Thorne, and Thomas & Delila servants of Broth Lazarus Hitt, all of which was granted.
Henry was appointed and served on grand juries in Smith County on 26 May 1856 and 14 December 1857.
Henry also appears in miscellaneous Smith County court records from 1865 through 1876.

Birth: 17 MAR 1810 in Laurens County, South Carolina
