BETHABARA BAPTIST CHURCH:
On page 4 of the Minutes of the Bethabara Baptist Church in Laurens Co., SC (LDS microfilem 22728) Jesse Hitt is the 48th entry in the list of male members. This list was probably created in 1805 and later added on to. To the right of his name: "Dismissed by L. Recv'd. by L. 1827".
More specifically we find in the minutes the following:
August 10, 1827: "Received Jesse Hitt by experience"
October 10, 1829: "Jesse Hitt and his wife Jinsy were dismissed by letter"
January 18, 1834: "Received Jesse Hitt and Jensey Hitt by letter"
It appears that they left Laurens Co. and then returned. This is consistent with my interpretation of the census. However, a description of the founding of the Siloam Baptist Church in Sumpter Co., Alabama in the notes under Rev. Benjamin Hitt suggests that this Jesse Hitt was in Alabama as late as 1838.
February 23, 1839: William Hitt, Richard Golding and Jessey Hitt were appointed as delegates to attend the Union meeting to be held at Chesnut Rige.
On March 11, 1848 Jesse Hitt was appointed to a committee.
On May 24, 1851 Jesse Hitt was elected deacon and on July 26 he was ordained.
On July 24, 1852 Jesse Hitt reported that Brother W. Dandy had been playing cards. On the same day Jesse Hitt was elected as a delegate.
