Notes
General:
FAUQUIER CO., VIRGINIA:

In the Personal Property Tax Lists for Fauquier Co. there are a few entries that may correspond to this Peter Hitt. See the notes under John's son Peter (Peter on the river) for details.

WHERE DID HE GO?

On July 24, 1797 Harman Hitt, Peter's father, appointed two attorneys to divide his property among his children. Peter is referred to "Peter Hitt or his heirs". Apparently Peter had left Fauquier Co. and his father did not know whether he was still alive or not.

The evidence that Harman's son Peter went to Edgefield District, South Carolina with his older brother John and his cousins John and Peter Hitt (sons of Henry) comes from the appearance of the name of Peter's son Tilman Hitt in the deed records of Edgefield District in 1806, 1815, and 1818. Presumably Tilman came to Edgefield with his father. Harman's son Peter is not in the 1790 census in Edgefield, unlike his brother and cousins, and it would be normal to conclude that he probably died before 1790 and that the 1790 entry for Charlotte Hitt probably belongs to Peter's wife. Peter had a daughter named Charlotte. However, it is clear that Peter died many years later in 1824 in Dallas Co., Alabama.

Neither Peter nor his son Tilman are in any census in Edgefield. The first 46 books of the deed records of Edgefield Co. have been abstracted, which means that we have a list of all persons mentioned. This Peter Hitt is mentioned only twice, and then as an adjoining property owner. On February 21, 1797 John Anderson sells 122 acres on the west side of Stephens Creek to George Delaughter. It adjoins lands of Peter Hitt and Jno Hitt. This indicates that Peter and his brother John were living near each other. (Book 14, pgs 217-23, image 116/900).

There is no record of a land grant to either Peter or John Hitt. The earliest deed records are from 1787.

It might be that Peter Hitt left his wife and children before 1790 and that the reference in the February 21, 1797 deed just means that Peter Hitt is the owner of record of the adjoining land rather than that he lives there.

In another deed on February 8, 1798 James Rhodes sells a tract on the west side of Stephens Creek to Jas Carson. It is bounded on the east by John Hitt and on the southeast by George Delaughter and on the west by Peter Hitt's heirs (Book 25, pg 275, image 318/871). The phrase "Peter Hitt's heirs" suggests that Peter Hitt is either dead or has left.

CENSUS:

1790 Edgefield Co., South Carolina
Charlotte Hitt 013; 2 slaves; 2 other free persons
males >= 16 0
males < 16 1
females 3

This entry is contiguous with that of Geo. Delaughter.

GERMANNA RECORD NO. 1, pg 31:

Peter Hitt b. Feb. 1, 1755. According to the article, this Peter Hitt was the one who married Hannah James and died in 1802. We have dealt with this Peter who died in 1802 in the section on John Hitt, brother of Harman, as the evidence seemed to indicate it. However, he may have been a son of Harman, as stated in the Journal article.

CHILDREN:

The children of Peter Hitt (Tilman Hitt, Charlotte Lee, Fanny Pierce) are named in a 1830s lawsuit. See notes under Peter's father Harman Hitt.

PROBATE:
