Memoir by Maria Hitt Wood:
Died at his residence near Urbana, Ohio on 28th of Sept. 1826. The Rev'd Samuel Hitt aged 56 years of whom it may in truth be said that few men lived more beloved or respected or died more regretted or lamented; he sustained all the relations which he bore to society with that dignity and duty that at once characterized and adorned the good man.
As a husband and father he was mild and affectionate provident and kind. As a christian he was meek and lowly in heart and gentle towards all men. As a preacher of the gospel in the Methodist Episcopal Church which character he sustained about thirty five years. He was useful, concise, and spiritual, rightly dividing the words of the truth and giving each a portion in due season, and through his unstrumentality many were brought to the wisdom and knowledge of the just. As a member of civil society he was social humane and kind, friendly and egreeable in his manners and disposition.
He discharged one of the responsible duties of one of the judges of the Court of common Pleas for many years with honor to himself and to the satisfaction of the public. And without exaggeration it may be truly said that in his death the church and the State have sustained a loss not easily repaired.
Mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace.
His funeral was preached by Rev'd John F. Wright, from these words: "It is the Lord - let him do what seemeth him good." (1 Sam. 3.17).
Oct. 21 1855 his excellent wife passed away on sunday morning after almost thirty years of widowhood. They reared a family of ten children. They are an honor to their parents. Martin Hitt and Samuel Hitt were brothers: their wives were sisters. Callas, Peru. S. A. Maria nee Hitt Wood.
