A few days after her birth in 1942 Janet was adopted by J. Cloyd Miller and his wife Margaret.

J. Cloyd Miller married Margaret Meyer 26 May 1935 in Las Cruces, Dona Ana Co., New Mexico. He was at the time the principal of Lordsburg High School. In the 1940 census they are living in Deming in Luna Co., New Mexico. They have a 2-year old son, John C., Jr.

From 1952 until 1962 J. Cloyd Miller was president of Western New Mexico University in Silver City. The current university library is named for him.
