MAIDEN NAME:
Mary is identified as Miss Pentecost in a biographical sketch of her son-in-law Matthew Gayle.
It is very likely that Mary is in some way related to the Scarbrough Pentecost who wrote his will 25 Mar 1795 in Brunswick Co., Virginia. Mary has a son named Scarborough. In the will Scarbrough Pentecost imposes on his son William the condition that he take care of and support his Aunt Nancy Rees during her lifetime.
WILL and PROBATE:
The will of Mary Rees can be seen in the Sumter Co., South Carolina probate records at FamilySearch.org, "Will book, vol. A-AA, 1800-1822", film # 355728, pg 110, image 131/366.
Another copy of this will is in "Miscellaneous estate records, 1784-1960", "Bundles 79-82", film # 216941, Bundle 81, Package 3, images 274-277/447.
Mary Rees wrote her will January 10, 1807. She bequeaths to her son Scarborough Rees all her Negroes, who are listed by name, all her stock of cattle, and one bay filly and mule. She bequeaths to her granddaughter Jane Rembert her bay mare, one feather bed and furniture, her chest of drawers, and two cows and calves. She appoints Scarborough to be the executor. The witnesses are Willis Ramsey, George McCauley, and John W. Rees.
The will was proved October 12, 1807 by the oath of Willis Ramsey.
